Which train ticket type should I get?

We are planning on traveling to Germany-Switzerland-Austria after our cruise ends in Venice. We are a family of 5 (kids 19, 17, 7, all good travelers), with at least a suitcase each. I would guess that plus a backpack. Our plan is to take a night train from Venice to Halstatt or Salzburg, spend 2 nights in Salzburg (also visit Eagle's Nest), 2 nights Munich, see the castles near Fuessen, somehow get to Murren (2 nights), go to the Bacharach/Rhine area (1 night) & fly home from Amsterdam (?-haven't booked flights yet, but this seems to have the most options for cheaper flights so far).

So my questions are:
What kind of train tickets should we get? If we get a Eurail pass, can we use that on the overnight from Venice to Salzburg & get a couchette? Or should we get point to point for that and then get regional passes for the Bayern & Rheinland regions? What's the best way to get from Fussen to Murren? Do all train stations have large lockers for rent--big enough for suitcases? Driving in a foreign country seems daunting, so trains would be our first choice. Thanks so much!

Jen,

I'm just wondering what the 5 of you will do at 4AM in Salzburg when the night train arrives from Venice?

When is the journey?

It will be in mid June. The train I saw left at 8:57 pm & arrived at 8:10 a.m. That was on raileurope.com. It was booking at $650 for 5 in a couchette, which seems expensive, but rail passes are, too!

Oh no! That was to Vienna, when we were contemplating that city. I hope all the trains don't get in in the middle of the night. I guess the idea of one less hotel night might not be the case.

For starters, do not get a Railpass. You can travel more cheaply on tp regular tickets, some bought in advance. Others you just buy there, like the ticket that covers 5 people on regional trains in Bavaria. Hopefully someone can explain that better.
Second, are you sure you want a night train? The EN train from Venice to Salzburg gets in around 4 am. What are you going to do then? Hang out in the station for 2 or 3 hours until someplace opens for breakfast? Not my idea of a nice trip. I tried to find prices for this and only came up,with around 258 euros on RailEurope, for second class seats. Is that a 6-person couchette, or really just seats? They don't say. Again, maybe someone can offer more help on finding a way to book a 6-person couchette and the price, but bottom line is I wouldn't advise taking the night train.

Besides, that route has you zigzagging up to Salzburg and back down to Switzerland and then back up to Germany your way to Amsterdam.

What I would suggest is this:

Buy tickets from Venice to Milan on Trenitalia. The trip is 2.75 hours and prices start at 19 euros for Super Economy fares ( book well in advance). Then book from Milan to Lucerne in Switzerland. You can book a Smart Fare on Trenitalia or a similar discount fare in the Swiss rail site, SBB.ch. when we did this a few years back we got the tickets from Zurich to Milan for 26 Swiss francs each.

Spend the night you would otherwise be on the night train in comfort in Lucerne. Next day head to Mürren, about a 3 hour journey including the cablecar up to the town.

Mürren to Munich will be a fairly long day, but it starts off fun with the cablecar. Buy tickets for the direct train Zurich to Munich in advance on SBB.ch or the German site, bahn.de. I see them as low as 49 euros for the direct train (bahn.de also shows a bus for 19 euros, taking the same four hours as the train, but it goes to Hackerbrucke).

From Munich continue to Salzburg and then Rhine area. Again, buy tickets in advance especially for the Amsterdam leg to get the best price.

You do not want a car for this type of trip because renting in one countryn( Italy) and dropping in another incurs big drop fees. Also, a car for five people plus luggage will be a van, expensive to rent and to fill with gas. Trains are great and will be fun for the kids ( and much more relaxing for you).

Sasha, THANK YOU! That does sound like a good route. I will investigate it thoroughly & start my ticket search. I love these boards & hope someday to know enough about Europe to help others.

Jen, I would look carefully at that RailEurope offering. Is that to Hallstatt? The only night train I see on either RailEurope or bahn.de is the one that gets in to Salzburg at 4:09 am. It does leave Venice at 20:57. They must be taking you to Salzburg and then you change trains to continue to Hallstatt. According to bahn.de, you change after Salzburg and get in to Hallstatt at 7:31, still pretty early to check in to a hotel. I was looking at June2 for the schedule.

I made a specific inquiry to Thello, and I imagine the OEBB night train would be the same, if you want the entire 6 person couchette to your selves, you need to buy an extra ticket. Otherwise, you run the chance of a stranger sharing the couchette with you. Book directly with OEBB (Austrian railway) and skip Raileurope. All you get is a more expensive ticket and a bit of hand holding.

The night train (EN236) from Venice to Salzburg goes on to Vienna and has a stop at Attnang-Puchheim just before 6 AM. A regional train to Hallstatt leaves Attnang-Puchheim 11 minutes later, arriving at the station across the lake from Hallstatt at 7:31.

If you can, get the night train tickets from Austrian Rail, not RailEurope.
