Hi guys! I know this has been discussed over and over, but I still have some doubts, so I thought I'd publish the list, and you could tell me... All of these items are less then 3oz. So, here we go: hand sanitizer - solid deodorant - shampoo - sanitary wipes of different kinds, including make-up removers - febreeze - lipstick - lip balm - moisturizer. I think that's it. Also, I'd like to know if I can take 3oz bottles like the ones sold at minimus.biz, which have no indication of the content or size... I'd guess not, but is there any way in which I could use them? Thank you!!
Liquids and gels in the bag...and if the size isn't marked on it, leave it home.
In the bag....hand sanitizer, shampoo, febreeze, lip balm, moisturizer.
The solid deodorant, sanitary wipes and lipstick (if solid) should be okay out of the bag but perhaps a female with more experience traveling with these items can help better.
Most commercial products in smaller size containers are marked with the amount.
I forgot a couple of things... hehehe! So, I know toothpaste, and a little bar of soap both go in the bag; but is it okay to take detergent for washing clothes?
Oh, by the way, thanks for your reply, Frank!
Toothpaste in the bag. Solid soap not in the bag, liquid soap in the bag. Detergent, if liquid, in the bag. If powder, not in the bag.
Remember...liquids and gels in the bag, solids and powders not in the bag.
If you can spray it (aerosol or pump), squeeze it (gels or pastes), or pour it (liquids), it goes in the bag. If your lip balm is a stick, it doesn't need to go in. If it's in a little pot, it does need to go in. You can certainly take unmarked bottles, but you'd have to prove how much they contain if asked.
Olga sometimes the plain empty bottles will have a size indicator molded into the bottom of the bottle. I know that nalgene does on theirs. I also think that as long as they are not obviously bigger than the 3 oz size you'll be ok. Just fill them with your own stuff at home. I use 2 oz nalgene bottles for my shampoo and other stuff.
I've had friends who brought 3 oz bottles with them but weren't marked and TSA said no go. Of course, since we all know TSA isn't consistent, your home airport may allow it. I've seen TSA confiscate solid deodorant because they considered it a gel when it was not.
Same thing with lipstick--mostly it's fine, but I had one confiscated in Brisbane once...grrr, it was an expensive one, too!
Wipes of whatever kind are fine out of the bag. One thing you might be fooled by, if you use it, is mascara--it has to go in the bag, believe it or not.
I've found that very small bottles are never questioned--so if it's obviously smaller than the three ounce size, don't worry if its marked or not. I have a number of tiny pots--all in the half ounce or one ounce range--that I fill with things like moisturizer or eye cream from my big "normal" pots, and I've never had anyone question them.
