I am going to Lourdes, france at July , but I don't want to spent 17 days there. Any suggestion about where to go? which country is fun for 8 years child with 80 years old mother? help, thanks
I'd vote for a week on a small Greek Island
Greek is good, but Ia lso liked Golden Cost in Southern France, especially Nice is good for kids.
There are a lot of options in France. An 8-year-old and an 80-year-old would love Carcassonne, for example.
I Love Greece, but I don't suggest it for your elderly mother, its more travel time, then once you get to Athens, more travel time to an island, and then on the island walking on lots of uneven surfaces.
Are you renting a car or relying on public transport?
Stay in France, or perhaps Italy. I think there is alot to do and see along the western coast of France also, the D Day beaches, Mont St Michel, ST. Malo, Bayeaux tapestries, beaches, little towns, and nice mix of old fortified fishing villages and beach towns.Italy is also not a bad idea, even an 8 yr old would most likely enjoy seeing the Colisuem once you explain the history behind it, and all kids like pasta and pizza!I don't think I would do Florence though, I thought it was a bit boring when I was younger.
FRANCE. It has something for everyone to enjoy. Museums for children. Boat rides on a river. Scenic train ride. Big chateau to walk through. ... I suggest read parts of the travel guide book : "THE ROUGH GUIDE TO FRANCE" and look at the color photographs that are in the front of that book. And look at the color photographs in the DK Eyewitness book on FRANCE. If you want to go out of France : NORWAY is good for families. Read about it in the books : "Rick Steves' SCANDINAVIA", and "THE ROUGH GUIDE TO NORWAY".
Countries are not the same as theme parks. Which country is fun for a family: US or Mexico? By chosing one over the other I'm explicitly stating that the entire other country is NOT fun at all! You can find family friendly fun places all over Europe in every single country, probably even in Belarus, Europe's last dictator-ruled country. Personally I found Lourdes to start to get annoying after around 6 to 8 hours as it's simply totally overcrowded. But there are so many beautiful areas nearby: The towns of Biarritz or San Sebastian (one of my favorites, great city beach front, old style). Barcelona is fun, too, so is www.portaventura.es. The Rioja valley also is a beaut. And all of these places around the Pyrenees.
Every country has something that is family friendly. In my experience just try to stay away from the big cities that can be very stressful for kids and seniors. France is great - as long as you avoid Paris or Nice. Try Brittany and Normandy with their beaches, smaller towns. We stayed at a very family friendly B&B just outside Dol-de-Bretagne: close to Mt St Michel, close to St Malo and had a great time as a family there www.manoir-de-la-mettrie.com
We all have our standards but I would not avoid either Nice or Paris. Evveryone should go to Paris -- young and old. I think Nice would be a nice option in July. The beaches are topless so that could be a bit of surprise for both. The hill towns behind Nice are very nice and easy to reach via buses. Even I enjoyed the perfume factories -- from a technical viewpoint. I think you need variety and a slow pace.
