There is a possibility my family and I will be meeting our daughter in Prague mid March. She will have just finished a study abroad (Rome, Vienna, Budapest and Prague). We would spend a few days in Prague and then travel to ? for about a week. Where are places you've gone mid March that the weather wasn’t too rainy or too cold? We live in the Pacific Northwest so would love to be somewhere warmer and drier. South of France? Portugal? Spain? Thanks!
I spent a week in Barcelona this past March 11 - 18th. The weather was a bit chilly sometimes, but overall pleasant. I think it sprinkled twice, but not heavy rain.
Catherine - How about a trip to Lisbon Portugal in Mid March and you can also venture off to the Algarve region which is nearby. The weather is warm in those parts around March. The Cote D'azur region of France is also an option as the weather there in march will be mild. Nice and Cannes will be lovely that time of year. So consider the South of France as well.
If you dropped straight south, to Croatia and/or Slovenia, it would be warmer than Oregon, but still highs just in the 50’s in mid-March. Still, it would offer a bit of a cultural contrast from where your daughter will have been, and you could go to islands or the mainland.
Even farther south than Spain, it will have started getting warm in Morocco, but not as searing at it would be in summer. Nights will be cool, but not as cold as when we were there last January - gosh, has it been a year already?!? You might find inexpensive flights to Marrakech.
We’re heading to London this coming March, and will be prepared if it rains the entire time, but it’ll still be warmer than Colorado.
Nowhere in mid March has great weather anywhere in mainland Europe.
I have been to the Algarve a couple of times in March and the weather has been variable, some days with torrential rain and some warmer, but not hot days (around 20 degrees). It’s generally good for exploring, but not warm enough for the beach. It’s cold at night.
Now, for a better chance of warmer weather, we head to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.
I would go to the Andalusia region of Spain, Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada.
Portugal also would work well.
Andalucia has good weather in March - warmest driest part of Europe. One day in Sevilla I wished I had packed sandals. The orange trees line many streets, they are in gardens and plazas, and they should be in blossom then - gorgeous scent. They're everywhere in Valencia too (of course) and March 15-19 is Las Fallas (see pix here). Barcelona was just a tad chilly when it was windy.
My "best" March vacation, weatherwise, was Andalucia. Absolutely beautiful. Plus has the advantage of it being a place you don't want to go in summer as it's too hot. It's also just a great destinatin and perfect for 'about a week'. I did 8 nights Seville-Cordoba-Granada and that was perfect. Another March I was in Malaga and Ronda, etc. which should have been as wonderful but it rained almost every day. But you can't go on one person's experience one year. On average it should be good.
Last year I did Mallorca, Ibiza and Valencia and had two weeks of almost perfect weather. Two days of cold and rainy, rest in the mid 70s and sunny.
Portugal - Lisbon and Algarve - were quite cool, windy and rainy a couple years ago but everyone there said it was the worst March in years.
Italy can be great or not, I've had both.
But the thing to keep in mind is, since there are no guarantees, is the place you choose to go somewhere that there will be something to do if the weather is bad. In Italy if you choose Florence or Rome you'll be fine in bad weather. The Amalfi Coast or Lake Como not so much. Same with all the destinations. I've spent a lot of March vacations in London and Paris and had huge variety in the weather - some glorious sunny spring days with all the flowers in bloom it was just lovely. Then other times cool and gray and wet. (And sometimes in the same week). But you can stay in the city and do indoor things on bad days and enjoy parks, walks or day trips to the countryside on nice days.
Not sure what “too cold” means but March is a month we love to travel. In March, we have enjoyed visits to northern Italy (Venice, Padua, Bologna, Sienna), Austria (Salzburg, Innsbruck), Switzerland (Geneva, Montreux, Gstaad), Germany (Munich, Dortmund, Iserlohn), and England (London, York, Canterbury).
So many great ideas! I'm glad to see that there are so many great choices for March. We've just always traveled in the summer around school vacation so I had never really thought about going any other time. Spain is sounding like it could be a great choice, partially because it looks like it would be easier to get to from Prague, but also because it's been a place we've wanted to visit. My husband was able to find some non stop flights to Barcelona as an option. We know there's no guarantee on weather but would just hope it'll be close to at least 50 and no downpours (but if there is we'll manage since we are from the PNW ;) )
Portugal is very high on my list of places I really want to go to, might just take too much of our available time to get to from Prague.
Thanks so much for all of you help!
hope it'll be close to at least 50 made me smile. I spent a week in Barcelona in February and another in March - close to 50 would have meant it was getting pretty darn cold :-)
