Where to travel in Europe beginning of November??

I had been planning a trip to southwest France(Bordeaux, Dordogne & French Pays Basque) for the fall. Now it looks like we are unable to travel until the first week in November. It appears that isn't a great time in terms of weather for that area. It is their rainiest month I believe. Until my husband retires, we have concentrated on France so we can have more travel time, since we can only get direct flights into London, Amsterdam, and Paris, though I may need to be open to other options. I am looking for suggestions for places to go in Europe during November.

We have traveled tocMadrid and Sndalucia twice in late October, early November. The weather was perfect for sightseeing and walking around the cities of Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada and Madrid.

You may get lucky in early November, but likewise, you may get lots of rain anywhere in Europe. The clocks change at the end of October, so it will be getting darker earlier when you travel.

In the hope of better weather, stay south, such as southern Spain, Portugal or southern Italy. Greece can be very wet. I am heading to the Canary Islands in November in search of better weather.

Otherwise, embrace the cooler weather and head to Scotland.

I just replied to your thread on Spain. I think that's a great choice. Andalucia is the warmest, driest part of Europe. Southern Italy would be my second choice - Rome, Sorrento, Salerno (surprisingly good base for the Amalfi Coast).

BTW if you do go to Spain and have to change planes in Europe, look for flying into Madrid and out of Granada or Malaga.

Rome would be great in November, even further south. I think October is perfect for Northern Italy and November for Southern Italy, with Rome being roughly the dividing line.

Andalusia would also be a good choice. Northern Spain does get very cold but Southern Spain should be nice, but not beach weather, in November.

I would go to Barcelona. When we went in early December it was still pleasant weather, only a couple light layers needed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to watch for any additional thoughts, but southern Spain sounds like a great idea. Barcelona is a good thought as well. I was there in January 2017 and we thought it was wonderful and would recommend it as a winter destination. The crowds were smaller and for folks from the midwest of the U.S. the weather was lovely. We even walked barefoot on the beach (in mid weight jackets) and collected some sea glass

Why not concentrate on France in the first week of November? What's the problem?

My husband and I will be in Paris the first week of November and can't wait. If it rains, we use our umbrellas. Nobody melts from rain; there aren't monsoons in France in November. :-)

Continental--I've been in France several times, now, and rained on quite a bit in Paris (it did feel like a monsoon! You should bring a raincoat and umbrella because the umbrella ended up pretty worthless), and it didn't matter that much because we do love Paris. I've also been snowed on A LOT in Munich, Budapest and Switzerland. Like you, I just make do. But, I do try to pick my travel locations with weather in mind. After all, my "bucket list" is long! So I have plenty of choices. When we have gone in September/October we've enjoyed harvest time and some wine tasting. In your case, if I really wanted to go to Paris and November was the time available, I'd go for sure. The one thing I do try to avoid is any location in their peak tourist season. I had an amazing time in Prague in January. The weather was actually pretty decent and we didn't have to deal with masses of people.

I'm getting pretty excited about Andalusia in November! I've discovered with good flight arrangements, Madrid is only about 3 hrs longer than Paris for us. I will go back to planning a trip to Dordogne/Bordeaux/Basque France when a time in September opens up for us. Unfortunately for me, I seem to love every place I go in Europe!

Thanks everyone for the input!

I'm with you about avoiding peak tourist season which is why we avoid summer in Europe. We don't travel thousands of miles only to be surrounded by mobs of tour groups. We also consider weather especially in terms of heat and humidity. You avoid the rain; we avoid hot weather; nothing over 80ºF . :-)

Barcelona won't get as cold because it's on the sea. I think it will be cool, and possibly wet, but not as cold as inland. I was there in April, the highs were right around 60 but that was cooler than average for that time of year.

Cities generally remaining interesting in bad weather. In the colder half of the year I usually travel with plan city and plan countryside in my pocket.

Fortunately that time if year it is usually easy to be flexible, traveling without reservations and with the ability to switch back and forth depending on the weather.
