Where to stop between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Obernai?

Hello,

In June, we will be driving from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the Alsace region. We will be staying in Obernai. Based on viamichelin, the drive will be about 5 hours. We would like to stop some place worth checking out -- we enjoy walking around small, picturesque,or historical villages/towns. This is our first time in the region, and we just can't tell by looking at the map what towns are scenic and/or interesting. We just want a little break from the long drive, keeping in mind we still want to get to our destination at a decent hour.
Thank you!

The direct route skims the northern shore of the Bodensee, which is very scenic. Consider a lunch stop in either Lindau or Friedrichshafen, depending which you hit closer to lunchtime.

If it's too early to stop for a meal along the Bodensee, your route will also take you through the heart of the Black Forest. I've only driven by the town once so I can't comment too deeply, but Titisee-Neustadt is a popular spot.

Hi,

In France I suggest Strasbourg unless you intend to see it as a day trip from Obernai. In Germany Freiburg im Breisgau or Ulm. Obernai is a nice, small, quaint place, I went there once in 1999 as a day trip from Strasbourg, saw a lot German tourists there, also observed that number of the service people/ staff in the stores were bilingual, speaking both German and French.

Tom, thank you for the suggestions. If we get started around 9am, we just might hit Bodensee around lunch time, and have some time to walk around.

Fred, we will be based in Obernai. We plan to take a day trip to Strasbourg.
