Where to stay in the Rhine Valley

We're taking our German vacation in August. We (myself, wife, and four kids ages 13, 10, 7, & 4) were planning to fly into Frankfurt early morning, rent a car and drive to Bacharach and spend two nights. We have not been able to find hotels there or in St. Goar. What do you recommend? We were planning to rent a car from the Frankfurt airport. Would you suggest otherwise?

Try Pension Lettie in Bacharach. Stayed their last week for two nights. Lettie is a VERY nice person & there were several families in residence during our stay.

Very inexpensive, with a very good breakfast

We have rented a car at the train station for significantly less than the airport. This is the same for most cities. The airport tax can be 10 percent or more.
We are flexable, undemanding, and have had good luck finding lodging on the spur of the moment in Germany. All but the smallest towns have a small combination hotel/cafe/bar near the center. Typically 10-20 clean rooms with breakfast included.

I agree with Kent about not showing up without reservations. With 4 children, looking for rooms is NOT what I would want to be doing after a long flight and drive. Try Boppard. I stayed at the Rheinlust hotel. It appears to have many more rooms than the typical hotel in St. Goar or Bacharach (which are a few miles upstream.) Boppard has interesting buildings and scenery...lots of German tourists and few Americans. http://www.hotel-rheinlust.de/

If all bb's are full stay at Etap Hotel. www.etaphotel.com. they are a chain well-priced, super clean and great for families. great website for online booking and location searches. Don't give up on B&B's pensions as I just got reservations in Bacharach 5 days ago for Aug 1. It must have been a cancellation but there were also vacancies in St Goar and Mosel Valley all from Ricks book.
good luck and enjoy

Don't limit yourself to just what you see in Rick's book. Both Bacharach and St. Goar have town websites with lists of hotels. Bacharach is www.bacharach.de. I was particularly impressed (from the outside) with Im Malerwinkel (www.im-malerwinkel.de). A really beautiful setting. Hotels in St. Goar (www.st-goar.de) can be found under "Gastgeber". Many of the hotels in these towns have their own websites and email addresses.

Likewise, the hotels in Boppard can be found at www.boppard.de. The Hotel Bellevue (sp) there is a Best Western, so you might be able to check availability on the BW website.

Another town is Braubach, www.braubach.de, at the foot of the Marksburg. You will find hotels listed under "Unterkünfte". I had lunch at Weinhaus Wieghardt (www.weinhaus-wieghardt.de) and was very impressed with it.
