If you could choose between Milan and Zurich to spend 4 nights prior to a river cruise (we will be in Zurich the night before the start of the cruise and transfer to Basel) , which one would you choose and why? We will be arriving by train, if that makes a difference, into either of the cities.

I would choose Milan. By staying in Milan, you could take a short train trip for the day to Varenna on Lake Como. Also the Milan Cathedral is beautiful. Be sure to go on the roof of the Cathedral. I have spent a lot of time in Zurich. I think it is a beautiful city, but Varenna is so close, I would choose Milan.

The question needs a month of the year for the best answer. Although Zurich has plenty of good restaurants, I would suggest that the food might be better in Milan. Do you have time to advance-purchase Last Supper tickets? OTOH, there is lots of good art in Zurich too, and you might have time for Luzerne if Zurich is too urban for the whole 4 days. Would you go to the Rheinfall or Stein am Rhein? Does the boat stay include any visits in Basel, or just boarding and leaving?

We would be there the last couple of days in April and the first two days in May. I didn't think to add that, but I can see how the weather at the time of year may make a difference.

Also, forgot that we will transfer from Zurich the day of the river cruise, board the boat in Basel and sail that evening. So, we would have a little time to walk around Basel, but not an overnight there.
