Where to go in October?

My wife and I have an opportunity to go to Europe for 10 days in October. We traveled a few years ago to Italy and we were in Rome for 3 days, Tuscany for 4 nights and Venice for 3. Rome was ok but too busy in June. Absolutely loved the countryside and Venice.

We are trying to plan our trip for October but keep bouncing around countries trying to find the perfect trip. We’ve looked at southern Italy, Greece, Switzerland, France and started to look at Spain. Would like warm weather in a relaxing atmosphere by water but if it is going to rain all the time as I have been reading is it better to go north into the cooler temps? We are really open to anything and looking to enjoy great food, some history and relaxing. Also, potential for us to take our 15 and 12 year old if I feel safe enough to do so. Please any advice would be great.

I suggest Spain or Portugal. However, their Covid situations don't look great.

Amsterdam's weather is quite consistent throughout the year as it's located on the coast, but 10 days there is too much. You will need to combine it with, say, Paris.

Oct is the best time to visit Symi Island and Rhodes according to my 777 Wonderful Greek Islands book.

Rome is lovely in October, perhaps my favorite month there. Tuscany is still lovely, after the harvest, less crazy-busy than September. Of course the Amalia Coast is fine, too, but the islands are definitely into off-season.

Paris, too, is lovely in the autumn, crisp but not yet cold. Perhaps Paris and Amsterdam as suggested above.

It is, IMO, late for Switzerland. Mid-October the Berner-Oberland (my favorite area) takes a break before the ski season starts in early December. Lucerne might be OK but I have never been there in October.

Switzerland is open to vaccinated tourists and Italy mostly is. Praying by October the barriers are few!
