Where to go in November (around the 1st through the 14th)

Hello!

My almost husband and I will be honeymooning in Europe...we have to go in November due to his farming schedule. I am looking for suggestions on where to go...I would love to visit Ireland but I've heard it's quite rainy in November. We also looked at going to Germany/Belgium/Netherlands too and traveling via train. I'm also interested in going to Switzerland. We love to hike/adventure, we enjoy pubs/breweries and awesome drinks/food. Not looking for a super lavish vacation, but it would be nice to stay in a nice hotel for 2 or 3 nights. We are first time travelers to Europe, so really I'm looking to see as much as we can in 11-14 days. All suggestions welcome :)

Thanks!
~liv

The most beautiful weather at that time of year can be found in Southern Spain, Andalusia, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, etc.

It can (and does) rain in Ireland at any time of year. The bigger issue is how few hours of daylight you will have, since it's so far north.

Switzerland in November is not great, because it's in between hiking and skiing seasons. You can have lots of clouds or rain obscuring your view of the Alps, and you don't want to have paid Swiss prices to not see the astounding natural beauty.

If you want indoor attractions and cities, November can work in Germany, Belgium, or the Netherlands. But for "hiking and adventure" it's not the best time (again, rain, clouds, and short days).

So, I agree with Suki - southern Spain is a good bet for you. Two other advantages are that Andalucia is insanely hot in summer, so you're missing the bad weather season there, and you're going in a low season so you'll miss the worst crowds. If you want to see the Alhambra, you'll need to get tickets in advance (apparently this now sells out every day), but otherwise, you should get step-right-up service at most attractions without needing advance reservations, and not have to contend with crowds on your hikes and walks.

NW Germany (Mosel area), Netherlands (Amsterdam, Haarlem) & Belgium (Antwerp, Bruges) would be a great trip, easy by train. But you'd have colder weather and rain. I've gone on this trip in May.

I had the same question a few months ago, and actually my dates are the same as yours! I took the advice from many on this forum and choose Andalusia. So our plan is to fly into Madrid and take a train to Sevilla. After a few days there, we will rent a car and drive through the pueblos blanco and then return the car in Granada. We'll take a train to Cordoba and then to Toledo. I've found that nice, RS recommended inns are super inexpensive. There are some wineries in Arcos and Zahara and I'm looking forward to the great sights in these cities and great food including tapas.

Another vote for Andalucia at that time of year. We also flew into Madrid and took the train to Seville. After a few days in Seville, which included a day trip to Cordoba, we rented a car and drove the hill towns. We spent a few days in Grazalema, with some hiking before driving to Granada. In my opinion, the Alhambra is an absolute "must see" and we truly enjoyed the town of Granada and all of its great tapas bars. While in Granada, we chose a great little bed and breakfast in the Albaicin District which really provided us with great local culture. Alhambra tickets sell out months in advance, so if that is of interest then book them as soon as they become available. Although we spent several days in Madrid, it is my least favorite city in all of Europe and one that I have absolutely no desire to ever visit again. We didn't find Madrid to be particularly friendly to tourists. Barcelona is fabulous, but that is one location you may want to save for another trip. Enjoy your honeymoon!

The Greek islands should be nice during that time and Santorini may be the most romantic spot on the planet!! You can island hop and stay for any number of days on different islands.
