Where to go in March?

Hi all! My husband and I may be taking a trip to Europe in the end of March 2017 for about 10 days. Originally we were hoping to go in a warmer month, but due to a busy year ahead it looks like March is our best bet. Does anyone have a recommendation of where to go this time of year? We are in our late 20s and enjoy culture, food, wine/beer, history and nice scenery (even in the form of day trips). The destination doesn't have to be "warm," just tolerable. We're open to exploring one country OR hopping to a few that are close together.

Any recommendations are welcome!!

Thank you :)

Any one of these would be fine in March - I am biased toward places that are on the warm side at that time of year (relative to others). Do you have any leanings already? If not, I'd just check out some library books or poke around in a bookstore and see what appeals to you the most - make a short list and go from there. "Culture, food, wine/beer..etc." can be found in any European country, so it's not a clear discriminator. All of these, with the exception of perhaps Malta (very small but still very interesting), can take up all 10 days easily due to the size and variety of sites.

  • Spain
  • Portugal
  • Sicily
  • Italy (south)
  • Malta
  • Greece

Wife and I did a trip in March several years ago. We flew into Munich for a few days, did a daytrip via train to Salzburg, then boarded an Air Dolomiti flight to Venice for the remaining few days. Yes, it was cooler weather, but the LACK of tourists was A+++! I would do it again in a heartbeat if I could. Off season is such a gem of a time to go.

Young and lively?
Have you considered flying into Munich to take in the beer hall scene? The town has great palaces in the center city and out at Nymphenburg Palace. And Dachau is somewhere everyone needs to visit.
Then go over to Salzburg via train.

It's a train ride down to Budapest--another great city for 20 somethings.

The airfares are considered winter rates until the last of March--when flight prices go back up. We usually take our trips the last couple of days of March, and the winter weather has usually broken by then.

Southern Italy (e.g. Sicily), Southern Spain (Andalucia), or Greece will offer plenty of things to do, eat, enjoy, and the weather will be more amenable than in the northern parts of Europe. 10 days would be perfect for any of the locations I mentioned.

I am going to second the suggestion of Greece. Include a trip to Crete as part of the visit and you'll increase the potential for warm weather. But it's also wonderful to visit the sites in Greece without the blazing sun.

I would echo Agnes's list and add a few thoughts

Sicily is not as accessible without a car for part of the time. Lovely small towns, majestic Greek temple ruins, great food and wine
Spain is easy by public transportation. 6 days Madrid/Sevilla/Cordoba and 4 days Barcelona, great food and wine everywhere.
Malta is gorgeous on sunny days, not as nice if you catch bad weather. Also I'm not so sure there's enough to fill 10 days. The food was adequate, the wine was not.
Italy - anywhere, even in March. Easy by public transportation, no bad choices.

Thanks everyone for your advice!

My husband has already been to Italy and we want try somewhere new. Greece i'd like to save for the summer months when we can do the beach :)

David, yes we are young and lively! Munich/Salzburg/Budapest is something I thought about. We don't mind a chill and love getting the feel of a place's culture.

Some options I've considered:
-Munich + Paris
-Some combination of: Munich (w/ day trips) + Vienna or Prague or Budapest.
-Paris + Bruges + Amsterdam
-Paris + elsewhere in France (Strasbourg, Dijon, Normandy?)

Should mention I'm dying to get to Scotland as well but not sure how the weather would fare in March (though I know it's unpredictable all year)

Any thoughts on the above? Thank you all!!

This past March some friends and I did a Europe trip. We did a stopover in Iceland, which was still cold, and then we headed to Belgium and the Netherlands. It was not warm there but it was definitely tolerable. I think temps were in the 50s most days. That may or may not fall into your definition of tolerable though. We had a really good time. Great beer of course, and plenty of culture, history, and scenery. I would definitely recommend the area during a March trip. You could easily add Paris on too, since it is so close.

Well as mentioned weather is always unpredictable, but march in U.K. Generally yields cold and rain , once was in London mid march and it sleeted and rained , Scotland is far north of London , no I would not go there in march!!

Paris could be cool and rainy, could however be nice early spring weather too, however so much to see and do inside there weather isnt as important .

In ten days could do Paris and Barcelona, fly into one 4 - 5 days , then fly to other and fly home from there ( buy multi destination airline ticket , into Paris out of Barcelona) -use EasyJet or Vueling etc for flight between two cities.
