I have to be in Europe the third week in October for work and plan to spend the fourth week with my wife vacationing someplace, hopefully warm. Right now the top contenders are Sicily, Mallorca, Amalfi Coast, and Greece (already have been to Crete, Santorini and Naxos. Any thoughts or recommendations are welcome. Most concerned about weather and places being open.
We were in Amalfi at about the same time of year. It rained. A lot. Might want to check the seasonal averages. I would suggest Andalusia, Spain. we were there starting the 2nd week of November and we found the weather to be wonderful.
You can check average monthly rainfall (and usually also number of days with rain) in the Wikipedia entries for most cities of size. For an end-of-October trip, I'd take the average of October and November. You'll find temperature average as well, of course, but I don't really trust those, because they seem to be based on a period ending in 2010, and things have gotten wackier since then. For temperatures I prefer looking at the actual, historical, day-by-day figures provided by timeanddate.com, but it's very important to check statistics for multiple years.
We were in Sicily and Puglia in October. We had a little rain but most days were sunny and warm . Not too hot. Not crowded.
We have been in southern Spain and Madrid in late October and the weather was perfect. Sunny, not hot.
We were in Greece the first week of October and weather there was very nice. Not crowded there either.
Suki, just let me know when and where you are traveling and I'll be at the same place!
The fall season is the perfect time to visit Symi Island and Rhodes.
We’ve been to Sicily, Basque Spain, Florence in Italy, and to Nice, France in the last half of October on separate trips. Nice was ideal. Agrigento, Sicily was pleasant and not scorching hot, as it can be in summer. Farther north, Taormina was basically rain the entire time that trip.
And in 2015, after Madrid, we caught a 5 hour train up to Bilbao. We later rented a car and stayed in San Sebastián, another place where in October it wasn’t overcrowded. We did get pouring rain one day, but otherwise it was temperate and coolish - nice. Eventually continued farther east, to Salvador Dali locations, to Girona, and eventually to Barcelona.
Florence was not mobbed. While there were some people, I got photos of David with no one else around. There was no better time to visit the Bargelo museum and the Brancacci Chapel. It rained some, and outdoor dining doesn’t happen n October, especially in the very cool evenings.
I’d do Nice again in October on a heartbeat. All the others would be close second choices.
I would opt for southern Spain or Portugal. Perfect weather and still plenty of things open.
I have had very mixed weather in Mallorca at that time of year. The wind blew the chairs off our balcony on the third floor!
Mallorca is beautiful in October EXCEPT for last year when cold weather began quite early. A fluke or climate change?
In October the olive harvest begins and it's beautiful to go up into the Tramuntana Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Everything is open but the beach resort hotels tend to close last day of October. A magnificent hotel to stay in would be Belmond La Residencia in Deia. They close around the 10th of November. It's a great time of year for hiking and the beaches are still active.
In 2014, we visited a number of countries in the Balkans starting on Oct 15. This was great as crowds were nonexistent. We were in Sarajevo Oct 25-28, and it was pretty chilly. We needed coats and gloves. Remember that this was the site of the Winter O in 1986. It was really fun, though, as we had much of the town with only a few other brave souls. We went on to Dubrovnik, Nov 6-9. Again, very nice, not cold but cool, no crowds at all. A little windy at times, so that the cable car to the fortress above town was closed.
