Where to go in Europe for a week in December?

Hi all, so my question is this, where in Europe should I spend around a week in early December (outside of Spain)? I am fairly open to anything; however I do not ski, if that helps. Thanks!

There is plenty to do in Berlin for a week and the Christmas markets will have started by then. Paris, Rome and London are all places where you could easily spend a week. Your remit is too broad, as much of Europe could be suggested.

Thanks guys!
Sorry for the broad question, I have really no idea where to start, I usually go south and tropical during the winters, but this time I think I will stay around Europe. One thing I probably would not go for is something very bleak like "Finland in the winter". London is probably as far north as I would go...

Bavaria! Munich, Nuremberg, Bamberg. All decked out for the holidays, Gemütlichkeit, Christkindlmarkt (Bamberg’s small and not a zoo). A time to celebrate.

For a week in December I'd pick one city that's big enough with enough to keep you engaged for a week. For a trip of one week, I wouldn't want to hassle with relocating.

My pick would be Rome (because I haven't been yet and that's my plan for December 2019), but you pick any city that appeals to you.

Bavaria and Rome both sound fantastic! Also floating the idea of maybe Prague in early December? So many choices...

JS, I was wondering where in Greece would you recommend? I heard the Peloponnese and Northern Greece can get quite cold in the winter.

I wouldn’t recommend Greece in the winter due to the weather.

Kristen, did you find there was still much to do in London during the winter? I have never been to London outside of spring/summer.

Of course u would need to be selective for dec in Greece. Not all the ferries operTe yr round. But some nrby islands to Athens and Napflio. Ck transportation schedules ahead so wu know your options.

I did London one Christmas about 6 years ago, then Rome for New Year. Not one of my most memorable trips. Cold and wet both places. But could have been nature chasing me... Think of Israel or Jordan or if you are adventurous, Egypt. All relatively cheap right now and linked to Europe with relatively cheap flights....

I would recommended London, England; Prague, Czech Republic; Vienna or Salzburg Austria; Budapest, Hungary; or Spain, Madrid.

Hope this helps, and safe travels!

There is tons to do in London in the winter. We spent a very busy and full week there during Thanksgiving a few years ago. Museums, plays, holiday decorations at night.

My suggestions would be Nuremburg or Vienna since you don't ski. Nuremburg is the smaller of the two, and becomes a major tourist draw in December due to the famous Kriskindlemarkt. But I think that's one of the major attractions; walking along the Pegnitz River, the shops decorated, drinking warm Gluhwien as you look thru the vendors stalls. The music and crowds make it pretty festive in the evenings. You can easily take day trips to Rothenberg, Nordlingen, Bamberg, Wurzburg, or (hardly ever visited by tourists) Ansbach. Lot's of old world Christmas going on in Bavaria/Frankonia.

Vienna is beautiful when it snows, and there's so much to do you could easily spend a week just walking around the city. They have a lot of special programs in December.

Athens--i spent a week there last year in November and again December and plan to do the same this year--you'll be able to get fresh pressed olive oil then as well. weather was sunny in 60s most of time, only 1 rain day.

Thanks phaedra! Yeah either Greece or Sicily seem like really viable destinations at this point, just trying to narrow it down from there...

I adored Sicily despite visiting it during the miserable heat of summer, but you should understand that it is a large island with great sights scattered all over. I usually discourage short trips there for that reason. It's more suitable for a 2- or 3-week trip.

However, if you're looking for warmish weather in Europe outside Spain, that eliminates the obvious city-break destinations (which would be my normal suggestion for a one-week trip at a warmer time of year).

Maybe Malta?

I would pick one large city with enough options to do things inside (museums ...) if the weather is nasty outside. And for me, it should be a place with nice Christmas markets. That is such a special tradition that you just don't find in Northamerica. From that perspective, I'd pick Munich or Berlin. Berlin would also allow for an easy day trip to Hamburg for a change of scenery.

I wouldn't pick several places. Transportation in winter can throw you off your plans very easily and with only one week at your disposal, there is not much room to make up weather-related delays.
