We've got about 10 days to spend in Europe but have to go in high season. Any recommendations for places that aren't shut down for holiday (Paris) or flooded with tourists?
North is the place to be in August. I planned the Baltics this year and decided to go in late July/early August to enjoy the best weather the area has to offer. I normally prefer traveling in May or September.
Paris never shuts down.
I join Pamela- Scottish Highlands!!! I love Inverness and Aviemore in late July/August. Of course I also love them in Nov/Dec. Scandianvia would also rate as a top choice. Nice LONG days in either place and cooler weather.
Scandinavia
Riga, Tallin or Vilnius.
Scottish Highlands. Avoid Edinburgh unless you want the festival. Pam
Paris does NOT shut down in August. Actually, I think it is a decent time to go. Prices are lower in August and the weather is decent. I'm sure there are no more tourists in August than there are in June or July.
Definitely up North, Scotland and Scandanavia. Beautiful scenary and not hot.
Switzerland or Scotland are a good bet.
Nothing shuts down in Germany either. Just go to towns up North maybe, where it is cooler. You get tons of daylight too. There are plenty of interesting, historic cities and towns that are not flooded with tourists.
It is not always hot in Paris in August. When I was there in August 2006 I don't think it got over 75 or 80 degrees. We had AC in our hotel and never used it. And the "beach" area on the Seine is fun!
Andrea makes a great point. If you're used to Norman (Oklahoma?) in August, anywhere North of the Alps will feel relatively cool.
South of the Alps might still be a problem because the heat seems worse when you're in a crowd and many places lack air conditioning.
