Where the Google Maps app has taken me....

It started with a poster's question about the train/bus from Schiphol to their Haarlem hotel (Niu Dairy)...so I checked Google Maps....(I really like Haarlem and I love GM)....so I checked the distance from there to the Amadeus Hotel where I've stayed a number of times....and then checked the distance to Vroom & Dreesman department store....uh oh, found they are permanently closed.... but, wait, it appears that it is now Hudson's Bay dept store.....side trip to Google Hudson's Bay....it's a Canadian chain which decided to expand in Netherlands....but it appears prices were too high for the Dutch, so they've also introduced some less expensives lines in their stores, and one reviewer mentioned that not all associates speak Dutch....interesting...but the best part is that they still have their 5th floor cafe/buffet, with the great view over the city! That was one of my favorite places for a quick bite! .......

Which brings me to my point, I guess.......from checking Google Maps I learned something new about Haarlem, plus it made me think of other department stores that have cafeterias/buffet restaurants on their top floor....like Karstadt stores in Germany and El Corte Inglés in Spain. Reasonable for breakfast (Karstadt, not sure about El Corte Inglés) and also good for a tasty lunch, afternoon dessert and coffee, or early dinner when traveling solo....

So this is where Google Maps has taken me......
...does anyone else eat at department stores? ;)

Galeries Lafayette in Paris, rooftop cafeteria. Head outside to the terrace for great views of the city.

I had a nice meal in the lower level of Galleries Lafayette. I've had a beer on the roof top.

I do use Google maps for a few things. When someone mentions a place here that sounds like something I'd like. I go to Google maps and save it as a place I want to visit. After I visit, I change it to a starred location that I've been to or a favorite if I really liked it.

I also like Google maps for current operating hours, both when I'm traveling and at home. If I have to run around town to several stores. I'll first sit down and check their hours so I don't waste a trip. When I'm travelling, part of my pre-trip study is to check a sight's hours and note it in my rough itinerary (on Google calendar).

All that said, I'm seriously considering dumping Google, including email and search engine, completely because of their pattern of privacy violation. There is no information related to me that Google is unwilling to sell for any purpose - and that bothers me.

For department stores, El Corte Engles at Plaza Callao in Madrid has a lovely, upscale food court, outdoor balacony and gourmet food for purchase.

Also, I like to eat at Harrods in London, good gourmet food, if a bit expensive.

Brad, I understand your concern about Google. What are the alternatives?

I'm convinced that Google will take over the world. The Map is evidence.

This just reminded me that I'd seen a guy with a contraption on his head. A Google Man. So I just looked at where I saw him, Jackson Square in NOLA this last April. There's nothing from that date on the map, and I can't decide if I'm sorry or glad that I'm not on the map.

(Yes, I know there are a lot of people with contraptions on their head in New Orleans. But he really was from Google.)

My son and daughter in-law insist that maps.me is better than google Maps. I wish they'd provide a training session. . . .

We also eat in cafeterias- Harrods in London, in Haarlem too, KaDeWa in Berlin. Hotels also sometimes have nice cafes for coffee and a pastry, think Sacher Tort in Vienna. PS we learned the "we overpaid" way some charge by the bowl/plate size, so fill up. We have also had lovely lunches in museum cafes.

Whenever I am in Munich, I eat, at least once, ie early dinner, at the Karstadt. Good food at decent prices, peaceful atmosphere.

In the past in Germany I have also eaten at Horton's but they're gone. The times I have been at Karstadt for dinner the guests were all German. I don't use Google Maps.
