Where should I visit on way from Netherlands to Dublin?

Hello -

I need to be in Rotterdam June 2-5 and then in Dublin June 17-20 for work. Any suggestions on how I might travel from the Netherlands to Ireland and where I might visit in between? I have been to the Netherlands several times but never been to Ireland, so I am less interested in traveling around the Netherlands. In England, I have only been to Oxford and Bath.

I know this is probably a very open ended question, but I am not even sure where to start with travel planning (i.e., I am not sure if I should just fly to Ireland and spend the the 5th-17th there or go somewhere else in between). I enjoy hiking, biking, and visiting old towns (e.g., I loved Bruges), castles, and other historic places. I am less fond of big cities. I appreciate a museum or two, but tire after too much time inside.

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts and suggestions people might have.

Thank you!

Maybe get the Thalys and Eurostar from Amsterdam to either Ashford or London (don't know if any trains from Brussels stop at Ashford now) and make your way across England staying in Canterbury, Stratford and Chester. That's a fairly direct route that would then let you take the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin.

If you'd rather fly into Ireland you could take practically any route through the UK that would leave you in easy reach of an airport - the budget airlines fly from practically all the regional airports to Dublin.
