I really loved walking the streets of Reykjavik and seeing a mention of Seneca Falls, NY on the side of a building (graffiti style mural about women's rights). Being from Upstate NY, that hit pretty close to home for me, and made the ties between here and there seem stronger.
I did go to the punk museum while I was there last. The toilets are surprisingly still in place. The museum focuses more on Icelandic punk (I believe the curator was/is a punk rocker from the late 70s/early 80s, and was in fact there playing his guitar that day), so, except for a small mention of the Sex Pistols and Bjork, not much of it was recognizable to me. I still enjoyed it enough to not be disappointed.
I'm looking forward to someday getting to Horta on the isle of Faial in the Azores. Boats docking there leave a painting representing their craft on the pier, making it the largest maritime painting collection in the world.
In the States, I really enjoy when an area picks a theme representative of the community (e.g. quilt swatches on barns) and creates a trail to follow.
