Where is your favorite street art? And alternative art?

Reykjavik has beautiful street art of all kinds. Stickers from around the world.
Also a Punk Museum in a former public restroom. It wasn’t open when I was there.

A lot of Venice street art stays in area for stickers.

In Copenhagen, check out the art of Christiania., the Free Town started by hippies in the 1970’s.

What are your favorite places?

I really loved walking the streets of Reykjavik and seeing a mention of Seneca Falls, NY on the side of a building (graffiti style mural about women's rights). Being from Upstate NY, that hit pretty close to home for me, and made the ties between here and there seem stronger.

I did go to the punk museum while I was there last. The toilets are surprisingly still in place. The museum focuses more on Icelandic punk (I believe the curator was/is a punk rocker from the late 70s/early 80s, and was in fact there playing his guitar that day), so, except for a small mention of the Sex Pistols and Bjork, not much of it was recognizable to me. I still enjoyed it enough to not be disappointed.

I'm looking forward to someday getting to Horta on the isle of Faial in the Azores. Boats docking there leave a painting representing their craft on the pier, making it the largest maritime painting collection in the world.

In the States, I really enjoy when an area picks a theme representative of the community (e.g. quilt swatches on barns) and creates a trail to follow.

Surprisingly Portsmouth (the UK one) has a strong street art scene. Probably the most popular is My Dog Sighs https://mydogsighs.co.uk/art who's Portsmouth based but has produced art around the world. Someone else who has been commissioned to produce art in the Portsmouth area is a good friend of mine, Dharma77 www.instagram.com/luke_dharma77/?hl=en. Of course there's the usual abundance of eyesore "tags" but there are some real gems dotted around the city.

Bergen, Norway is known for their street art with over 250 murals. I’ve heard Banksy actually painted several early in their career which the city painted over before they became famous.

I am looking forward to traveling to Lodz, Poland to experience their legendary street art soon.

The murals in Glasgow are fun. They are scattered all over town. We printed a map and a key before we left home which was very helpful. You can also get a map at the tourist information office.

The street art in Belleville, Paris -- which is to say graffiti. The scene is so entrenched that local authorities protect classic examples against the casual vandalism of, yes, other graffiti. That's Paris for you. (Guided tours available; see Google.)

Fun topic! In addition to those mentioned already, Berlin has great street art, including on the former wall. Brussels has some decent comic book based art.

I haven't seen the French street artist Mifa Mosa in person, but the Instagram account is a fun follow.

My granddaughter and I recently returned from Florence and enjoyed looking for all the street signs altered by Clet Abraham. If this isn’t familiar to you, do a Google search. He’s quite inventive in adding stickers that do not alter the safety aspects of street signs but offer an amusing perspective.

I would say Berlin-Kreuzberg which I saw only once several years ago, the 2007 trip as I going the famous park, Viktoria-Luise Park. Lots of the "alternative art" could be seen.
