Starting this thread on the day I go back to the office feels almost insulting 😂. I do not even have another trip scheduled... But I'm not complaining, summer was quite busy with a 2-week trip to NW Spain and a 2-week trip to the Jura, the Toulon area, and Auvergne.

Well, I have been trying to hydrate myself better so drinking water first thing in the AM. Yesterday, I drank it and thought...gosh, I need to go ahead and start hydrating for the plane trip. It was about noon when I realized that the "plane trip" is 5 weeks away, hahahaha!!!

Too much time talking travel with friends, stewing about luggage, weighing packing cubes and tee shirts, etc.

I’m still trying to finish my June on-line photo book this week!

Otherwise, there’s domestic trips, and already some mental planning for Europe in approximately June & September next year. A tiny positive outcome of the Covid pandemic has been realizing that time is short, so two trips a year might become the norm while we’re still active - one solo for me, and one where my husband joins me for part of it.

Allan, you did Scotland, but are going back again for England?

We're recreating what 2020 was supposed to have been. We had booked the Scotland trip, and then in January of 2020 a seat sale to London popped up, so we booked it. Same thing happened this time, we rebooked Scotland and then in January 2022 the seat sale to London popped up and so we went for it again. Tip to anyone flying WestJet, it appears that seat sales to London show up in January for September/October trips.

The Covid years ruined my post-retirement "minimum 3 trips a year" schedule. I'm getting back on track though. The only plus is that the travel funds increased from lack of spending.

5 weeks, 2 days till my month in the US for family, friends, and shopping and also 5 days in Zion NP and Bryce NP bookended by Las Vegas, and 6 days being a tourist in downtown Chicago - Tammy, I plan to visit that rooftop bar and will raise a glass to you and Tim.

5 days in Zion NP and Bryce NP bookended by Las Vegas

Chani, Zion and Bryce Canyon are AMAZING ... if you're into hiking, the trail down to Queen's Garden is easy and the hike in the canyon is beautiful, but be forewarned, the climb back up thru Wall Street will test your legs (and everything else) ... Route 12 west of Bryce is also spectacular, you'll more than likely take that road coming and going ... I suggest going to Bryce first so you can enter Zion on route 9 from the east, breathtaking views on the way into the park ... be sure to stop and take the Canyon Overlook trail (parking is limited and before you enter the tunnel), not a very long hike but rocky and uneven in some parts, but the reward at the end is well worth it! ...

If you have time, the Valley of Fire state park is a worthwhile detour on the way to Bryce and Zion ... and Red Rock Canyon just west of Vegas is another marvel of nature (and you can watch the climbers as they scale the walls) ... and of course Hoover Dam east of Vegas is a definite visit.

"Alexa, how many days until I leave for Bulgaria?" Answer: 264!

CW, Alexa knows EVERYTHING, good thing she doesn't have video .. or does she?

Tammy It was the RAIN. Denali is really high on my wish list, so maybe on my next US trip. I've been along the Inside Passage on the state ferry from Bellingham to Juneau and back. It only made me want to see the rest of the state.

DQ & AMann Zion is my favorite place in the entire world! This will be my 10th visit (maybe 11th, I've lost count). And yes, we are going to Bryce first in order to have that morning drive in to Zion with the sun at our back. I hiked the Canyon Overlook trail once - solo - and there weren't any other people along the tricky parts which was a bit stressful, but the view was definitely worth it. My friend's been with me to Zion twice already, but not to Bryce. I'm going to try to get her up early for sunrise. We went to the Valley of Fire once, quite nice, but what I remember is driving back to Vegas and watching the gas gauge hovering just above empty. She'd done the driving from Springdale and thought there'd be lots of places to fill up on the road. We won't have time for Red Rock (I've been) but after Zion and Bryce, it's nothing to write home about. I don't remember the Queen's Garden hike but from your description I'll take a pass, thanks.

Now 16 days till we leave home for Italy.

We're considering serious isolation in advance of the trip. We had to cancel an Italy tour 2 years ago due to the pandemic and don't want COVID to interfere this time. We are taking the usual precautions, minimizing shopping trips, masking indoors in public, fully boosted. We'll be masking in airports, on the plane and when using other public transportation.

Are others being extra cautious while in predeparture mode?

Chani, didn't mean to talk you out of the hike ... the hike down to Queens Garden is easy and so are the trails once you're there ... it's the hike back up that can be tough ... but really not that much tougher than climbing up the stairs in an old cathedral to see the view from the top of the dome ... or the Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga, Portugal ... just take your time, stop to admire the the beauty and before long you're back to the top of the rim.

I thought I was the only person that counted days a year in advance. We are planning/preparing for a transatlantic cruise in May that will follow the coasts of Portugal and Spain the second week and end in Barcelona, where we will spend additional days. We made our hotel reservations yesterday and will probably deal with airlines soon. J said the cruise countdown was at 241 days today. We also are planning to return to Italy in the fall, but I try to limit my daydreams to one trip at a time, especially with the holidays approaching. I got a little mixed up this year she we returned to international travel.

Have not yet made airline and hotel reservations. I think we will try United Economy Plus. Will be my 25th trip to Europe which has been a long-term goal of mine for years. I said I wanted to go to Europe 25 times. After this trip I'll make a new goal of 40 times. Would like to say 50 but I'm getting up there. Not ancient yet, but working on it.

Also starting to plan a trip for late September - early October to Black Forest area and Bavaria in Germany. Have no idea at this point how many days out other than a lot. Hope to use frequent traveler miles for this trip.

Happy Travel planning everyone!

Love reading about all the upcoming travels!

I leave tomorrow for the Bay Area to see mom.

A trip to Eugene, OR next month to see my parents and then another trip to the OR coast for a girls weekend.

Our big trip this year is not until July, so about 6 month away. That is a camper van for 10 days in the Westfjords of Iceland, then another week for Thorsmark and Westmann Island for 2 days.

San Jose, CA, in 12 days for a sports event, returning on Jan 30.

Rome and Naples in 32 days (this qualifies as an "eek", because I am so not ready and will be back from California for only 10 days before departing again).

Sweden/Finland/Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania and probably more, beginning June 14. Return date not set, but most likely late September or early October.

I've never tried to do a winter trip to Europe before. I have my doubts, but at 71 years old, I worry about running out of time before I run out of destinations.

May thru June . The longest we have been gone about 6 weeks. First… tour for southwest England with mark Seymour, then week on our own in Glasgow. Hope over to outer Hebrides tour with James mccletchie for a week. Then week or so in london on our own. We scored baseball tickets for cardinals vs cubs game.

I envy you fine folks that can travel for weeks at a time. Due to work and family commitments we can only get away for 10 days or so at a time. I salute you extended travelers!

We're spending 8 nights in Edinburgh in July, preceded by 4 nights in Boston in June. As for Edinburgh we're touring with Rabbie's.

Also, going to see Bruce Springsteen in March for our 40th anniversary.

Probably flying out to San Diego to see my daughter.

So, a big year for us.

Not Europe, but Mexico (Yucatan), and we are leaving in 24 more sleeps.

This was a last-minute decision. I just finished booking accommodations two days ago. We had been thinking of going to Southeast Asia, but my mother-in-law has Stage 4 cancer, so we've decided to stay on the continent where we can get home with a single flight, if necessary.

We haven't been to Mexico before, as it's never been high on our list, but we are looking forward to it.

20 days, to a 36 hour stopover in Iceland, 4 days in London, and 5 days in Paris. I.Cannot.WAIT.

It has been almost 11 years to the day since the last time we were out of the country (went to Paris and London then, too, on our honeymoon). We're taking our 7 year old with us, and meeting up with my older brother, his wife, and his kids in Iceland and then traveling together. They haven't been out of the US before either (the kids I mean, of course this is assuming their passports actually get here in time).

I haven't started packing my bags yet but it's getting close lol.

It was nice! I liked it but we essentially just had a 36 hour layover and while we got a taste of the country I very much would like to go back for a longer period. None of us (7 people) really slept on the flight over, so we were pretty exhausted. I am considering going in November for my birthday (the big 5-0) but then part of me wonders if I really want to go somewhere cold for my birthday.

My next trip is a bit of a mess.

  • May 30, Texas to Budapest (Delta)
  • After about a week, I have a week long side trip out of country that we will save for a trip report (train)
  • Back to Budapest (train)
  • Next day Budapest to Frankfurt (my son's birthday and he is assigned to NATO at Ramstein AFB) (Lufthansa)
  • Three days later, back to Budapest (Lufthansa)
  • A week later off to Malta for five days (Ryan)
  • Back to Budapest (Wizz)
  • A week or so later, to Washington D.C. for 4th of July (Delta).
  • A few days later to Pennsylaviana as my daughter will be giving birth (rental car)
  • July 11 I am out of plane tickets and hotel reservations. So no idea after that. Maybe Budapest but most likely Texas.

EDIT: Decided, Budapest 6 August till 28 October. Havent decided on the side trips yet, but I am guessing at least 1 month of that out of Budapest. Maybe Slovakia or Montenegro or BiH.

Roubrat, I realized I had the tour date wrong, and just edited my earlier post. It's actually more like 830 days, give or take, until we leave. Fewer, if we take on something else earlier (like maybe My Way France?)

And this is so unlike us, planning something over 2 years in advance! We have never done that, but someone dangled a shiny object in front of me, and I pounced.

We did something similar earlier this year, but in the opposite direction, when we booked an almost last minute tour for February. Hmmm, maybe I'm loosening up as I age? Or more likely, realizing that the expiration date on our birth certificates is drawing ever closer.

Travel while you can!

Jane-- "We have never done that, but someone dangled a shiny object in front of me, and I pounced." I am laughing because that is how we have decided on many trips.

roubrat--Yes, travel while you can! I am still pretty young (mid 50's), but am having TKR right after our big trip in August. We just got back from 17 days in Iceland and have nothing booked for future travel. I admit I sound like a spiked brat, but it is hard as I always like to have something to look forward to. We had planned on the Netherlands this spring, but that may not be in the cards as a TKR has been delayed for who knows how long. So right now, I am even unsure of when I can get back to see/help my mother. Home projects just are not as fun as trips, but sadly for at least a month that is all I have to look forward to, lol.

I am at about 12 day out for a short Business trip to a nice lake side location, but I am about 27 days out to my Flight to Germany.

This would be less stressful if the business trip was not stuck in there.
On the other hand I can use it as a “test pack” for the trip.

I don’t have anything planned after this trip, but then If you asked me 8 months ago I would have said this trip was not going to happen so…

April '24 will be Spain for another three-week trip. Hoping to see some Holy Week and April Faire celebrations.

As I mentioned above, my travels are limited right now due to knee surgery. I did buy airline tickets yesterday though to go see my mom in December. Not a vacation in the usual sense, but at least it is something.

I am still looking at The Netherlands, but am hoping to move that up to about January or possibly February before I do the other knee. We hoard our miles and it is time to start using them. My husband isn't so keen on this, so I will see if our daughter wants to tag along. I just want a week to wander and have a change of scenery.

Christa, how do you know the ravens name? We will be in London for 11 nights in 3 days and on my last visit to London (24 years ago), I didn’t get to see the ravens at all, so it’s a MUST this time.

Tammy, you can ask about the raven Matilda and if she is still at the Tower. When we were last there, she was stealing food from children who were sitting on a bench (eating a bag of crisps) in the grass of the Tower grounds. We were up in the White Tower, looking out the window with one of the Tower guides. He got on his radio and said "Have someone come get Matilda." He explained she had been behaving badly and might be taken to The Farm. I guess that's where the Tower ravens go who behave badly.

Uhh...are these ravens flying around unrestricted where visitors are? 😨

I've just done some googling and YouTubing and it's borderline terrifying (yes, I have a bit of a bird phobia. Thanks accidentally watching The Birds when I was 4 years old, and thanks being attacked by a magpie when I was 15 years old).....but no way I'm not going to The Tower of London when I go next year.

Posted by
3719 posts

The ravens are walking around on the ground, mainly. It's my understanding their wings have been clipped a little, making short hops up into a bush possible, but no, they won't be flying around everywhere.
Most of them are kept in cages at the Tower.
3 or 4 of them are out walking around.
There is a Ravenmaster at the Tower; that's his only job.
He and the Beefeaters keep the ravens from bothering visitors.

We are going to Japan on Nov. 10, to walk the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage path with MT Sobek. We were in Japan with them in November 2019 for a different path, the Nakasendo Trail, and the trip was so great, and the fall colors were so gorgeous, we wanted to return. The pandemic intervened, but now Japan is open.

In the meantime, our daughter who lives nearby is due to give birth to our grandchild any day now ( or actually any minute), so we will busy once that happens. So I need to start packing.

I am catching up on this thread today.
It is nice to read some of the old posts of future trips that are now past trips. I remember reading some of the trip reports.

The last time I posted here it was August, 2022 and I was counting down to my first trip to Paris in September, 2022. Oh my gosh, I am a different person now! I am now a person who loves Paris! Thanks to DH for convincing me to go to a place that I didn't want to go to. (I will do something nice for him today, I think)

Since going to Paris, I have been to {Paris, Normandy, Rouen, Liege, Luxembourg} in May, 2023 and PNW in August, 2023. {Inside brackets are the cities we slept in or will sleep in, not all cities visited}

There are 191 days until my first trip to Japan {Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Miyajima, Osaka}.

There are 311 days until my next trip to Paris. I used miles and $91 for my flights, so I am very pleased about that. Paris has stolen my heart and I am pretty sure I will keep going back there.

Not me, but my husband has a very exciting trip for this summer. He was accepted to be part of an adventure expedition and will be sailing a 68' yacht from Iceland to Greenland and back. The expedition is a couple weeks long. I was able to book his airline tickets using miles too, so that was nice!

Next European vacation isn't until July 2024 when we will hit the Netherlands (maybe Belgium, too) and then a Norwegian fjords cruise. Still planning those details, but 200+ days to go.
After that, further out, is a Hong Kong - Singapore cruise including Thailand and Vietnam, so need to plan pre and post-cruise travel. For that, it's a year away, so plenty of time.
Short term, we usually have US stuff in the works and on the books. Next up, we'll be taking our trailer out for a week at the beach during the Christmas-New Years break. I imagine cold and windy at the Delaware shore, but it should be peaceful as well.

Then spend the rest in London with day trips. But it gets complicated. Some times, i just want to wing it.

We got back a week ago from 2 lovely, relaxing weeks in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. This was a consolation trip, after we had to cancel our Feb trip to Egypt and Jordan. That was heartbreaking, but DH had his visa application denied. (Canada and Egypt are currently in a spitting contest over visas and entry requirements). I was tempted for a minute to go without him, but then sanity prevailed.

We've just booked a 12 day Scotland tour in September - starting in 203 days. We'll continue on our own for another 10 days or so in England; most likely York and London. Because I can't go to the UK and not have at least a few days in London.

We will pick up a van from Christchurch and probably start with a drive across Arthur's Pass then head south to the Alps. Still fine tuning plans and it will be flexible throughout.

@ Mardee.....My trip starting in May and ending by 1 August, or thereabouts, will last 10 to 11 weeks all within the Schengen zone. Not going over to England on that trip. Fantastic....your trip to the UK will be taking off soon !

59 days before Poland, Italy (Venice and Florence) and England. Starting to fret about filling the holes in the travel arrangements. And figuring out how to handle mail and newspaper delivery for almost 60 days.

Less than a month to go, first time using Seymour Travels and going to the Cotswolds for 10 days. Our guide is a former Rick Steves guide, so it should be fun!

Fantastic thread, Mary!
Eleven days until we fly to Amsterdam! We will have a few days on our own, never been there before. We will celebrate my husband’s 70th birthday, and then we will take RS Best of Europe tour, then fly from Paris to Glasgow for RS tour of Scotland. My bag is packed. It’s starting to feel real, this was in the works since last June….how come I don’t feel ready?😂

Taking the 12 year old granddaughter on an Alaskan cruise as soon as school's out.

Been to Europe well over 20 times and we've seen most all of the big cities 4-5 times each. Only place we've missed is Lisbon. I was in Europe 2x last year and did mission work in Israel-=not knowing what we were doing was getting ready for refugees.
