When to book my airfare

I will be traveling from Bergen to Gdańsk in early June (doing back to back Rick Steves tours) and I was wondering when the best time to buy that airfare is. I’m fine on the timing for US to Europe flights but wasn’t sure about the short hop flights. Thanks for your input!

One of the most asked questions in all of travel. Do some Google and see all the opinions you'll get.

The most common advice is to set up a trip on Google flights and then set a price alert. You'll soon see the many peaks and valleys and come to realize what a good fare is. Plus on that route you may have few choices.

I just didn't know if the small airlines had a greater habit of changing their flight times far in advance. It's not that I care so much about the price as I am that someone will go out of business or decide they don't want to service the route. But maybe this is a well used route. Maybe a better question is-Is Wizz air a decent airline to try.

Barbara you might want to post your specific question about Wizz air separately just so folks know that's your question. I haven't flown that specific airline but have done many budget flights in Europe - the biggest issue I have with them is usually with their fare pricing (you get charged for every little thing - seat assignments, luggage, etc.). You might also look at Norwegian airlines they have plenty of options from Bergen (but you will likely have to change in Copenhagen or Oslo).

Barbara,
You might seek out info on Wizz Air from Mr E (Resurrected). He has often recommended Wizz Air, if I remember correctly.

I've flown Wizz maybe 8 times. Always been an acceptable discount airline experience. I don't think it saves any with them to buy more than a few months in advance.

Personally, on the major airlines my buy time is 4 to 7 months in advance. The fares are good and the flights are less likely to change.

MarkK, note that I said for a discount airline. In that survey the number 1 airline "Aegean Airlines stands out as the best European airline due to a few factors. The first is that they received the maximum number of points for comfort and travelling with pets."

Norwegian airlines "This airline is the second-best for customer reputation and offers a top 5 lounge experience, also based on reviews."

SAS "The carrier rounds out the top 5 European airlines for a few reasons: it received the maximum number of points in two categories, which were pet travel and safety."

For a 60 to 90 minute flight I don't require luxury or a nice lounge, I just want cheap and a convenient schedule. I don't care about the comfort of the dogs on the flight, and quite frankly being allergic to dogs would prefer they not be on the plane. My preference for a short hop route would be the cheapest convenient flight. All the airlines will get you from A to B.

But neither SAS or Wizz have great cancelation records, so those tickets I would buy maybe a month in advance, that should mitigate that issue to some degree. Still the cancelation rates are less than 2%. With Wizz the price will be the same a month or 6 months out unless its a very popular flight.
