What would you take on your trip?

I thought about this question today, as I looked around for an empty dryer at the laundromat.

Our washing machine went up in smoke... Well, it's motor went up in smoke a couple of days ago, thus the trip to
the laundromat.

So...as our clothes were getting washed, my mind wandered to my last trip, when I was at the self-serve laundromat in Sevilla...

Then I thought, wouldn't it be great, if I could take whatever I wanted on my trips & still travel light?

Just picture 'Mary Poppins'... she arrives traveling very light; one carpet handbag & an umbrella!

Once inside the house... she retrieves a floor lamp, a wall mirror, a large potted plant & other various items from her bag!

So... if you could pack 3 things in your one carry-on ('Mary Poppins' style), what would you take?

WAIT! Before you answer, there are a few rules:

  1. This question is about things, not people, pets or *animals. (We all miss our family, friends & pets) *{ Rule Edited 1/11/16 @ 22:23 -- So Nigel can take his goat}

  2. There is a size limit. Whatever it is, it can't be bigger than your bed.

So, on my next trip, I would take my washer, my clothes dryer & my bed!

What would you take on your trip?

I, too, would like my bed, my pillows (I sleep with 3, though!), and a big empty trunk for all the "stuff" I collect throughout the trip!

The coffee maker, our big old mugs, and a few pounds of Folgers.

Lots of extra clothes, a trunk to bring back big/heavy souvenirs (piggybacking on someone else's great idea), and a dorm-sized fridge where I could keep food from home that I miss while on vacation.

Helium balloons to carry my luggage, my 30 year old Weber gas BBQ to grill a frequent supply of Regensburger Würstchen (see how I got 2 for 1 there?), and a mountain goat.

I should be allowed to take a mountain goat because it is not a pet but a wild animal. If I can't have a mountain goat, can I have a domestic goat please?

If I can't have any goats, I want my towel. Never leave home without your towel.

@Nigel ok I'll bite. I perfectly understand the first two but why the goat, mountain or domestic? Do you need help with hill climbing these days or are you worried about tall grass? In California we can rent little herds of goats to help us reduce grass and weed growth on hillsides, another kind of 2-1 deal 😉

A folding chair. I wished to have a chair for me to sit on when I was on the trail between Corniglia and Vernazza in the Cinque Terre in Liguria in ITALY. At one point on that trail, very near the trail I saw a wonderful view of the Mediterranean Sea and waves crashing on rocks, white surf, white sea birds circling in the air below me. I wished to stay there for a while. I did not want to sit on the ground. A traveler really could bring a folding chair. In the REI catalog (a long time ago) I saw a photograph of a small chair (no arm rests). When the chair is disassembled, it all fits in a short and narrow bag. Light weight. That bag containing the chair could be put in a travel bag that will be check - in baggage to an airplane. An essential item for traveling is a bottle for water. I like a Nalgene bottle (blue color). It holds 17 fluid ounces of water, for drinking. Water does not leak out of the bottle. And its lid does not break easily. An other essential item, for me, is wax ear plugs, for reducing noise to my ears when I am in an airplane flying across the Atlantic Ocean.

Good thought on the helium balloons. Nigel. I was thinking a Sherpa or a pair of Oompa-Loompas for the hauling and lifting.

In summer, an air conditioner.
In winter, my under-the-sheet electric heating pad.
At any time, my 2 down pillows.
(Otherwise, I'm good with minimal packing!)

Thanks for your most wonderful responses!

Most of the responses thus far all make good sense, except for Nigel's... well only the part about the goat.

So, Nigel... why a goat?

Helium balloons!?! You're all forgetting something... you're traveling, 'Mary Poppins'- style.... so all you need is a large umbrella & you can fly wherever you choose to! Now, that would be great!

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread!

Nobody gets the goat? Well I haven't had permission yet, so I'd better explain.

You can do an awful lot with a goat, mountain or domestic. Think of the versatility. A goat will draw attention from the locals and their children so will immediately help live as a local. A goat can provide support on mountain trails, and can carry various things for you, like a miniature pack llama.

A goat can help you blaze a trail , by eating everything on the way.

You can take a goat anywhere you can take a dog.

If you are careful with which flavour goat you get you can have fresh milk every day.

And at the end, when you are both shattered, I hear that cabrito is quite tasty, and you can share.

So, do I get the goat? Or do I have to stick with the towel?

Nigel... Since you gave us such a thorough explanation, I suppose you can take your goat... And your towel...

I must say... that's a very impressive goat!

What flavor milk is your favorite? Chocolate?

Please note: You're the exception--- I've changed the rules above & added; "no pets or animals." ;-)
