What would you give up?

Apparently, it isn’t just for Lent anymore. USA Today reports a Trivago poll indicates that “38% of Americans would give up sex for a year if they could resume traveling immediately. For Brits, the number was even higher:40%.”

I agree that most already gave up on sex but as someone who hasn’t, I absolutely would give it up for a year if it meant I got to travel immediately again 🤣

don't suppose the company conducting the poll had anything to do with the way the question was asked or how the results were collated?

Anybody know what Trivago sells?

How do you think a similar poll by Tripadvisor or Expedia would come out if they wanted to encourage travel?

Trivago is a hotel booking site - compare prices, get lowest prices, that kind of thing.

While Trivago started as a German travel website, they are now primarily owned by Expedia (since 2012). They display hotel listings from over 200 different booking sites including a few owned by their competitors. (info from Forbes) Expedia used to own Tripadvisor until they spun them off in 2011.

It is amazing how interconnected many online travel sites are. In 2019, Tripadvisor earned 33% of its revenues from Expedia Group and Booking Holdings and their subsidiaries, primarily for pay-per-click advertising. The company's other websites include Airfarewatchdog, Bokun.io, Bookingbuddy.com, Cruise Critic, Familyvacationcritic.com, FlipKey.com, Thefork.com (including Lafourchette.com, Eltenedor.com, and Iens.nl), Holidaylettings.co.uk, Holiday Watchdog, Housetrip.com, Jetsetter.com, Niumba.com, Onetime.com, Oyster.com, SeatGuru.com, Smartertravel.com, Tingo.com, Vacationhomerentals.com, and Viator.com. Expedia operates Expedia.com, Vrbo (previously HomeAway), Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, trivago and CarRentals.com. (info from wiki)

The website interconnection thing is annoying and actually quite scary. Over the weekend, I googled (Binged?) Tilbury, a town east of London, looking it up in Wikipedia. No big deal. The next day I got a message from TripAdvisor, asking if I wanted to continue researching Tilbury as they had a selection of hotels and deals to offer.

I don't complain much about the travel ads since I dealt with months of Google returns on my tablet computer in Polish after having traveled to Poland. That was just a bit of a problem.

International travel is monitored by Passport control, and there are flight and border crossing records. Who’s keeping score on sex activity - how could anyone agreeing to that deal be held accountable?

Then there’s that “back door” thing ...
