What to wear in Greece (or southern Europe)?

I do not want a repeat of my Lisbon experience where I wore white jeans and a red, zipper-down hooded top out to eat at a fado restaurant. (I calculated wrong and didn't have time to go back to my hotel and change clothes.) Looking at everybody in black, I felt silly. Should I bring black pants to wear in the evening while in Athens and on the island of Paros? It will be warm.

Karen, first there is nothing wrong with white pants, but as a traveller I never bring them. They get dirty so fast and I like to pack pants or bottoms in general that I can wear more then once before needing to launder.

Dress is casual in Paros as I recall, Athens I am sure it varies from the type of place you go( high end to low end)

I always bring a black pair of pants though,, easy to dress up or down, but navy or brown are just as neutral and good. Its all about the dirt for me.

I prefer navy to black in the summer. It looks good on the beach (it's called navy after all!), looks clean and can be dressed up, without attracting so much lint as black pants (which are also a tad hotter).

I'm also a fan of lightweight, woven cotton skirts. Any cut you prefer, really, but those that flow and move will be more comfortable on very hot days than a pencil skirt (also easier to step on and off boats, buses, etc. with more room for your legs). Jersey knit cotton is a little warmer than most cotton weaves (think of the difference between a long sleeved t-shirt and a crisp oxford style shirt), but they don't wrinkle so much and are very easy to buy right now.

I second the suggestion about skirts. This year I opted for some skirts and (now in sunny Istanbul) I find them perfect. I am noticing (probably because I am paying attention to this) that many 'traveling' women do wear skirts. Comfort now, plus a solution to the end-of-trip dilemma of how to look 'nice', living out of a bag for 8 weeks, when we go out with relatives.

Are you going in summer? I watched an episode of House Hunters International recently. One woman wore spaghetti strap tops and very loose light-weight knee length skirts. The other wore long sundresses. They may have been dressed nicer than usual because they were on film. It was obviously very warm - so dress for the heat.
