What to Wear in Europe?

My husband and I will be spending two weeks in Paris and Rome towards the middle of April. We are wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to bring for wardrobe. We are in our late 20's and are wanting to be fashionable and fit in with what the locals are wearing.

There are lots of suggestions on here to help you pack but my suggestion is to make sure whatever you bring is comfortable and versatile. A few warm things to layer and a waterproof layer or umbrella will do fine.

I like to have a basic wardrobe of a few tops and bottoms I can mix and match, perhaps a nicer dress even and then focus on accessories. Think jewelry, hats, scarves, shoes, handbag (day and evening). People are going to notice that about you first rather than notice the slightly wrinkled trousers you have worn three days straight.

Start with a few things and remind yourself you can pick up a few 'souvenirs' once you are here.

We were there late April last year and needed a light jacket. Avoid parka looking jackets and you should be fine. As for wardrobe, I always recommend taking two pairs of sneakers, a brown one and a black one (look for "fashionable" ones by Sketchers, Puma, NB, etc.). Wear jeans, but try having them be on the darker side of denim. Avoid khakis, but regular pants in other colors, maybe navy or brown, would work great. Bring layers to change underneath (as many shirts as you may thing you need as they do not take up too much room), and then have one or two sweater/cardigan looking things to wear over them. Those don't get too dirty unless you spill on them (which then can easy be cleaned with those stick detergents by Shout, etc.). Have fun!

Well, since I pack light with only a carry-on and my daypack, I start with a basic color (mine is black), weights you can layer as it might be chilly, light sweater or jacket, mix and match items, separates only, with perhaps one skirt if you think you may want something for a special evening, but actually, nice slacks serve that purpose as well, add a color or two, scarves you bring or purchase there, a couple pair of comfy broken-in dark shoes that are multi-purpose, inexpensive fun jewelry. I tend to stay away from the travel knits as I find them to be sometimes sticky and hot in the warm months, but in the cooler spring they could work well. Perhaps a pair of dark jeans as well if room in your luggage. Traditional style will take you anywhere. Have a wonderful trip.
