I will be in Barcelona for a short 5 days in September. Any and all suggestions appreciated for what to see and what to do. Thanks! Lori
Hi Lori ! Barcelona is a great place to visit! Have you picked up RS Spain or his smaller Barcelona guide? This will give you wonderful suggestions on where to go and all of the basics of staying in Barcelona. And you can tailor your sight seeing to your interests. It is almost impossible to make suggestions when we do not know if you are an architecture buff (Gaudi), foodie (tapas), shopper, avid or bored museum goer, budget or high end traveler? Once you have delved into RS book, give us more info and the Helpline will help you! Bobbie

I was in Barcelona in May and it's a great place to visit! They have a hop on, hop off tour bus that can help you decide on what to see. Everyone is different but I saw the Gaudi designed buildings and the Sagrada Familia, Spanish Village, the Maritime Museum and walked on Las Ramblas. Read Rick's book and decide what YOU would like.
We did a private tour with "Hi. This is Barcelona" (http://www.hithisisbarcelona.com/) and it was easily one of the hilights of our trip. We did the "Tapas Like a Local" tour which was an excellent way to learn how to manage the tapas scene while chatting with our excellent guide about everything from food to Catalonian nationalism. Sagrada Familia cathedral is also a must-see...be sure to get your tickets at a ServiCaixa machine to avoid waiting in line.
Definitely walk down or up Las Ramblas, stop in at the open air market, you can take a mini-cruise down at the port, take cable car over the city, we did that and walked back down, it was a hike but worth it. Loved the cathedral and sitting outside with glass of wine watching the performers. My sister loved anything Gaudi, not me but we are all different. Enjoy. Just watch out for those gypsies.
In addition to the sites previously posted, I would add the Picasso Museum - although not a 'fan' of Picasso, it is worth seeing. The Cathederal is another place I would see again, as well as the rambling streets behind it and the Roman Colums as well.
I'm just now talking to a friend about Barcelona, and I found the site www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com. It shows lots of pictures/information about sites in Barcelona, really good! I especially liked (when I was there) Casa Battlo and Sagrada Familia and tapas!!
If you are a fan of art, you might want to check out the Miro Museum in Montjuic. Also, you can check Rick's tv program on Hulu.
Not mentioned so far but the top of my list is Montserrat.
