Just wondering what you do with the money belt with all of your important documents while on a long flight. Do you still continue to wear it? Seems like it would be uncomfortable for a long flight.
I put it in my carry on which I put below my feet so that it's difficult to get at. I always check before I land to make sure I have everything.
I just keep it on. If it fits well enough, you shouldn't even notice it, just like a regular belt.
I wear it, so I don't have to think about it. For me, that's the point of having it.
Wear it. You won't know you have it on.
Gute Reise!

I carry two--one that I wear around my neck and tuck under my shirt in the airport and on the plane--it give me easy access to my passport and seems more comfortable for the long flight. I carry the other in my carry-on and then wear it on my belt loop (inside slacks) when I'm walking around once I arrive. It's also a way to divide some of my cash, credit, and/or ATM cards.
I wear my moneybelt around my waist in the back; very comfortable right there in the small of my back. I would NEVER EVER put my important stuff in a separate bag; I ALWAYS keep it on my person.
Warning.
My mother's set off the metal detectors in Frankfort Germany (and it's the basic Rick Steves version) She had a few credit cards in it.
I don't wear mine since I need the passport for departure, on the plane (to complete those forms) and on landing. Plus on landing I need my ATM card. Just too much digging around.
I put it in my carryon under the seat in front of me.
My RS money belt has never set-off any airport metal detector. In fact it contains no metal, the zippers are made of plastic. The detectors must been tripped by something else.
The purpose is to keep your most important items secure. When you are flying, you are essentially in a room full of strangers. While organized pickpockets don't frequent international flights, crimes of opportunity can occur anywhere. Keep it on. If it's really uncomfortable, this is a good time to try different ways to wear it comfortably.
I take mine off when I sleep in a hotel or pension but leave it on at a hostel. It's also off when I shower but either in my hotel room or locked in my hostel room locker.
A properly worn money belt should be like your underwear. You hardly realize that it's there.
While I doubt it would get stolen on an airplane (where's the thief going to go?), it's simply not worth the risk. You're far more likely to accidentally lose it and who wants to start their vacation off that way?
I always wear it. One less thing to worry about with handbag, carry on, etc.
I wear it because it has all of my important documents. To me, I do not find it uncomfortable and don't even think about it being on me until I need to access it for the contents.
As I indicated my mothers did have credit cards in it which might have set it off, but was the money belt. They had to wand her and she beeped on the money belt. She then had to "Dig" it out from under her clothing (she had actually forgotten she had it one LOL!)
I also wear the around-the-neck type prior to & during the flight as it's the easiest for me to access & can be placed under clothing during the flight. After I get to the hotel, I change to the around-the-waist type.
I have a friend who "lost" a piece of jewerly from her jacket lapel. It was on when she went to sleep & gone when she awoke. No one could find it anywhere around her seat. She thinks she knows who took it & how, but without proof, what do you do? I'm always careful with my things.
Money belt is in our carry on. We use it when traveling in country. I want to be comfortable on that 10 hour flight over. No one is going to pickpocket you on the plane, or go through your luggage (at least I've never heard of that happening yet)
As another poster mentioned, we keep our carry on valuables under the seat in front of us. Our feet will keep hands away. It would still be safe in the over head bins. If you are traveling with someone else, if you go the the restroom, there is still someone at the seat to watch over your belongs.
Pack it for the plane ride!
I used an Eagle Creek model that can be suspended vertically off your belt. I found it less uncomfortable in the sitting position than a conventional moneybelt as I could position it along my left hip and practically forget I had it on as it doesn't sit atop sensitive areas.
The only snag with this model is that it isn't long/ deep enough for ticket length items, but I evolved into using it for deep cash storage, extra credit cards and the passports for the entire family quite comfortably.
As an aside, I split "all my important documents" up into three buckets: Secure Essentials: deep cash storage, extra credit cards and the passports were always on my person,( Eagle Creek model mentioned above); Secure Hold: (Stashed in places I wont reveal here)which held my Bank in US and Euro, passes, tickets and things not needed for a few days out; and then the Day Use items like your Spendy Cash, Current tickets, etc, which I carry in my wallet and "Man-Bag".
I have a fundamental aversion to putting ones eggs all in one basket, and as much as I think Money-Belts are a good idea, I firmly believe in managing your risk by splitting up the booty. Periodically I'd rebalance the load so that at any one point in time I wasnt badly exposed if one of the less secure buckets went missing.
Frankly, I became more obsessive about my camera and it's load of irreplaceable images and memories than any other item I carried. At the risk of seeming slightly daft, as long as I have my passport, my credit cards and my camera, the rest is "just passing through", if you know what I mean.
I use a money belt under my pants, and kept my passport, big stash of cash, and debit card there for the majority of the trip. Small amount of spending money in my pocket. But for the flight, I put passport and tickets in a neck pouch. It was handy whenever we needed it, and when we reached the hotel, we transferred the passport to the waist money belt and put the neck pouch away until the next flight.
Thanks for all this good advise. I not only have the money belt for my waist, I also have the one for my neck. Wasn't sure what to do with both, but now I have plenty of options for my 21 days with RS in Europe. Thanks all!
