We have 6 days between ending a sailing tour in Dubrovnik and meeting up with friends in Bucharest to tour Romania for a couple weeks. The free days will be at the end of August. Our sailing trip is mostly in Montenegro and we have been to Mostar and the rest of Croatia on a previous trip. I am looking for suggestions on what to do with 6 days. We are spending an extensive amount of time around the ocean so I am thinking about heading somewhere a bit cooler for the 6 days. We are on public transportation - plane, train, bus, etc. We like outdoor activities, beautiful landscapes, good food and wine. We have traveled Europe rather extensively but haven't spent any time in Eastern Europe. I am looking for suggestions that would be somewhat easy to get to (but we don't shy away from a travel challenge or somewhere of the beaten track either).
Croatia isnt the best connected country in Europe so its going to be planes or busses, and you will eventually have to be in Bucharest.
Six days is a pretty good time so I would say you dont have a huge time limitaiton,
I would start by going to Google Flights and putting in Bucharest to EUROPE, one way, non-stop, under $200. Then see what pops up. Check on multiple days because the discount airlines dont alway fly the same route every day.
Now make a list of all of the places that are of interest to you. I would say stay south of Austria, just to keep the Eastern Europe theme.
Then do Dubrovnik to Europe, one way, non-stop, under $200 and look for locations that are on your first list.
Repeat the same from Podgorica and look for locations that are on your frist list. The airport in Podgorica isnt terribly far from Dubrovnik and worst case you get to maybe see some of Montenegro you missed on your sailing adventure.
Now you know where you can go and have an easy connection on to Bucharest.
Podgorica to Budapest for instance is on Wizz on Tuesday and Saturday is about $100 depending on how heavy you are packed. Then Budapest to Bucharest also starts at about $100 every day of the week. Another idea is Belgrade from Dubrovnik, then on to Bucharest but a bit priceir, maybe sarting about $150 each leg. Istanbul is another I am certain you can reach from Dubrovnik and Podgorica and Bucharest.
If you didnt do the high country of Montenegro then thats a way to work in your outdoor desire. Its a beautiful country in the mountains. Then its only about 3 hours back to Podgorica for a flight.
Thanks. I wasn't aware of Podgorica so will have a look around that area. Good tip!
Podgorica isnt a beautiful place but its well located for places like the Ostrog Monastery https://youtu.be/ixrJu6qv46M?si=k3raWTGCE8FZo5NJ
and even further north to the Tara Canyon and the parks https://youtu.be/9aGMZB8hB5Y?si=4q0z6ctHNnc2GK0v A very special place. I will be back in October for fishing. You could easily spend a week here with fishing, rafting, zip lines, hiking in the parks. But the road back to Podgorica is very good and like I said only about 3 hours with great scenery along the way.
You said you were sailing the coast of Montenegro so I didnt say anything about the coastal towns but if you havent seen Ulcinj or Morinj, Perast, Kotor, Hercej Novi, Petrovac, Stari Bar ...... then you could do a week with that and be closer to the airport.
For transportation and for the mountain and lake parks, probably best to talk to an expert. If you are interested I can pass you a name.
Those two videos are out of a series done by the Montenegro tourist board. They are all good. If any of this is interesting take the time to look at all of the videos.
Have you considered biking?
No biking is in the cards for this trip unfortunately.
