What's your hangup?

Timely article in the WSJ over the weekend about how hotels have decided to start taking away storage space in their rooms. I had this experience recently in London where neither of my rooms had a dresser, which meant I had to live out of an open suitcase on the floor for a week. I guess I was lucky because apparently now some rooms don't even have closets, just a few hooks on the wall.

The article recommends bringing folding hangars just in case you're stuck with wall hooks. Their other suggestion, which is very unclassy, is to get extra laundry bags from the hotel and hang THEM from the hooks for storage.

One reason for no dressers is that many TVs now are wall mounted so they don't need furniture to live on. Also, hotels are trying to make rooms smaller to add to lobby space, because apparently that's where we are all supposed to hang out now.

This is the like the old mentality in Vegas, where the rooms were purposely not that nice so that you would be inclined to go spend more time in the casino.

I have no problem with not having a dresser, rarely or never use them. Just provide a bit more horizontal space to put a couple suitcases, without relying on the floor for storage. Usually they only have space for one, or only one of those flimsy stands to try to use.

Another common complaint is the lack of clothes hooks in the bathroom or in the room. Someplace to hang a towel, a robe, maybe some clothes or a jacket.

The lack of space to unpack drives me nuts if I am staying more than one night. We pack light, but I like to hang things up for easy access and to let wrinkles hang out. Having wall and door hooks for jackets is a bonus. Having to pack along hangars doesn’t fit the pack-light philosophy, IMO. It’s also nice if the closet or armoire has more than 4 hangars.

Not something I've ever given much thought about. Now, I regularly stay at Locke properties and one room feature is the abundant storage space with large wardrobe/closet like shelving & drawer units and plenty of hangers. The hotel i stayed at in Ironbridge had a large wire rack like contraption that provided plenty storage & hanging space in the room. For whatever reason I didn't make much effort to unpack and left my suitcase on the room's second bed for that stay. My accommodations in Chichester had a wardrobe. When i was hiking I was accustomed to living out of my backpack and just dumping it on the ground when hiking.

And while we're on the subject, luggage stands don't work anymore now that we've transitioned to hardshell clamshells which open in half.

They're only useful with older luggage which has a compartment and a lid.

Oh, another suggestion was in a two bed room to just turn one of the beds into your storage area.

You guys stay in nicer places than I do. I rarely see a drawer of any sort, and 3 coat hangers are par for the course in one of my single rooms (6 if a double). I agree it's irritating to have to cart along things like coathangers. I'm up to two inflatable hangers and a small lingerie hanger for doing laundry, 3 folding hangers and two pant hangers (but I may take three next time).

I'm sympathetic about the difficulties of designing a functional room in a minute amount of space; I'm a traveler always looking to spend as little as I can, and that means the room will be tiny. What I don't understand is the reluctance to mount more hooks and towel rods in the bathroom when space is clearly available for them.

We never unpack, so I don't really care if there's drawers. I just need enough space to put two suitcases. Usually one is on the luggage rack and one on the desk, dresser, or floor

Also, hotels are trying to make rooms smaller to add to lobby space, because apparently that's where we are all supposed to hang out now.

This is for younger travelers. It seems they prefer to work and hang out in a common space rather than sit in their rooms. They like large tables that can sit a few people and every seat has a socket or USB ports they can plug into.

Unless I'm going to be in a place for a long time, I don't unpack more than what I need for the next day. (I let my shirts hang overnight to get rid of any wrinkles.)

My beef is there is usually only one luggage rack. Why not two, so I can have one as well.

While I have no personal experience, I have read that leaving an open suitcase on the floor is another invitation to bedbugs. With no dresser or hangars, storing the (closed) bag in the shower (or the rare tub) is recommended. Risk adverse, I’d be inclined to do it.

I'm in the "never unpack" category for most hotel stays. Hanging clothes (not many) and jackets will find a place to be hung, but otherwise, mainly just toiletries in the bathroom are set out for regular use.

Do I want or need drawer space in a hotel? Probably not. Seems nowadays, I'd more want more plugs and charging options over drawers/dressers that remain empty.

Oh, another suggestion was in a two bedroom to just turn one of the beds into your storage area.

I rarely have this in Europe, but in the US, I always request two beds in a hotel room so that I can use one for all my stuff; especially if I'm only there one or two nights.

That said, I do appreciate dressers and hangers if I'm there for a longer period. I just got back from Florida and stayed with my brother and SIL. They were out of town when I got there, and there were only 2 lonely hangers in the closet. Not wanting to raid their own closets, I stopped at Costco and picked up a bunch of the narrow flocked hangers for $10. Much nicer for me, and they have extras now. :-)

We sometimes stay 5+ nights in a hotel so we do some unpacking and a drawer or a shelf or two in the closet is fine.
I don’t like putting my open suitcase on the floor, so if there isn’t anyplace to put the second one, I will just pull out the cubes I need, put them in the suitcase on the luggage rack, and close it up.

I lived out of a suitcase for business travel for many years and rarely used a dresser. Putting things in drawers or closets sometimes offers a chance of forgetting to pack something and leaving things behind. I ALWAYS empty the safe the night before for this reason.

If there is a spare bed (rarely), it becomes a staging area as a suitcase rack. I have used desk chairs, desks, window seats, but never the floor as someone mentioned, for a suitcase rack. I like open shelves in a room, but hate hooks. Most hooks are too short and only work with one piece of clothing.

I never unpack my suitcase so the dresser is lost on me. I do like a few hangers for jackets though.

I agree, two luggage racks would make so much sense.

I’m presently in London. I was in Oxford for 5 nights, stayed in a Premier Inn, then the Washington Mayfair Hotel in London for the RS London tour, then I switched to the Celtic Hotel also in London to a single room. My husband was with me in Oxford and the tour. All 3 hotels had about 14 inches of hanging space in a closet. Tour hotel had a door on the closet, cheaper hotels didn’t, but the one thing I really like is a hook on the back of the door that I can hang my coat on! The 2 cheaper hotels had them, the classier tour hotel did not. And your coat can take up A LOT of room in a small 14” space too!

I’m in a single room with great layout and I completely unpacked since I’m staying 10 days. I usually live out of packing cubes in open suitcase with just a few things hung if possible. I always carry 2 collapsing plastic hangers to hang wet stuff in the shower.

I haven’t run into a hooks only hotel room yet and I do go cheap when possible.

I need a surface like a desk or dresser, and I need a luggage rack. I don't unpack, but rummaging in a suitcase on the floor would be irritating. My peeve is not enough sockets on each side of the bed, I want my phone plugged in right where I sleep. Hanging out in the lobby is the furthest thing from my mind...I guess I am old, or, I just want my peace and quiet when in the hotel.
