What's your "Best of Europe in 21 Days"?

On Facebook this morning there was a post describing the RS Best of Europe in 21 Days as "the best three weeks you can spend in Europe."

It got me thinking...

  1. List item

What would be your itinerary for a Best of Europe in 21 Days tour?

Here are the ruies:

  1. It has to cover a broad cross section of Europe. Obviously it can't hit everything, but it should have enough variety to provide a good overview for a first-time visitor to Europe.
  2. It has to be doable by bus, similar to Rick's itinerary. No flights. (Train is acceptable for an itinerary that includes crossing the English Channel.)
  3. No stays longer than 2 nights. Total exactly 20 nights.
  4. It doesn't have to be all "greatest hits." In fact, to satisfy the variety rule, it should include a mix of cities, small towns/villages, and countryside.
  5. It doesn't necessarily have to be a trip you'd want to take. The idea is to come up with an alternative, workable itinerary for the "Best of Europe in 21 Days."
  6. (Optional) Include a rationale as to why your itinerary makes more sense than Rick's.

There's no prize. This is just for fun.

I'm still working on mine. My issue with Rick's is that 8 of the 20 nights are in Italy, so I'm going to try to come up with an itinerary that isn't heavily biased to one country (as wonderful and varied as that one country might be).

Consider this route (sleep in UPPERCASE cities) that consciously avoids overlapping RS Best of Europe in 21 Days and skips most of Italy:

  • LONDON
  • BRUGES
  • Brussels
  • MOSEL
  • Rhine
  • Romantic Road
  • MUNICH
  • DOLOMITES
  • Verona
  • LAKE COMO
  • Milan
  • FRENCH RIVIERA
  • ARLES
  • CARCASSONNE
  • Costa Brava
  • BARCELONA

We sold that for a few years as Best of Europe II (or perhaps, "2nd Best of Europe"). Sadly, it did not last.

Hello! I wanted to share my version (overnights are in bold):
Vienna
Lake Bled
Ljubljana
Trieste
Venice
Ravenna
Florence
Cinque Terre
Nice
Provence
Lyon
Swiss Alps
Bern
Mosel River Valley
Trier
Champagne Region
Paris

While this itinerary has some of the classics (Vienna, Florence, Paris), it also includes some medium-smaller alternative destinations for a first time visit to Europe, like Ljubljana, Lyon, Ravenna, and Trier.
