What is the best way to get from Italy to Greece? I am still in the planning stages of a trip so I can leave from any area. Or is it better to go from Greece to Italy. This will be in Mar/April.
Ferries used to be the most economical way, but many make the mistake of imagining them as cruise ships plying scenic waters as they sail you to your destination. The truth is that they are pretty utilitarian transportation with a run down casino, mediocre food, and an uncomfortable nights sleep, unless you spring for a private cabin. They travel at night, so little to see. I would, anymore, consider a budget flight to Athens. 4-5 hours of effort compared to over 24 hours by ferry for the same cost seems like the best way to go.
If you do a search in the box at the upper right corner of this page you might find some help. Search for "ferry italy to greece" or some other variation.
I can remember reading questions similar to yours in the past. Also search the archive section of this page.
When I searched a few years ago, I found very few ways to travel that route. I do remember that departure ports included Brindisi. The Adriatic is not a popular part of the world for travel.
To add some more details on Ferries: Most of the Italy/Greece ferries either leave from Brindisi or Bari. There are some from Venice and Ancona as well, but then you start looking at very long ferry trips. Some ferries will stop in Corfu, then on to either Igouminitsa, Patras, or both. Patras is the most common destination that then leaves you either to explore the Peloponnese or a 3-4 hour bus or train ride into Athens. You can get a range of passage: Deck (basically that, find what seats you can), Airline Seat (seat in a lounge, usually with bad movies playing), Dorm type bunk, then a variety of cabins. Most ferries leave late in the day, travel overnight, and arrive mid morning. For flights, try looking at the Aegean Air website, they fly from a number of Italian cities and have partnerships with a couple Italian budgets as well.
