What happened to my Bookmarks?

When did this happen?

I had a list of bookmarks (saved posts), and now it seems like they are all listed chronologically by date.
I had saved several posts which included information for my upcoming trip and now they are all scattered.
Oh well...

Do any of you wish we could have "folders" so we could keep our bookmarks organized?

Happy Spring!

Priscilla

I didn't even realize until you mentioned it that the RS website offered a bookmarking capability!

I just use my web browser's bookmarking feature. My browsers are synced across devices. E.g. I have a "Europe 2019" bookmark folder in Google Chrome with pages not just from this site but other sites, all related to the next trip. I can access them on my phone or laptop.

I don't have enough to lose track of what I would need in the future, but I noticed if you click 'view all', you should be able to sort by forum/country. That should help.
Given the mayhem caused in other forums that mess around with our saved posts, I don't think it matters how you file them. I guess the only way to ensure you have them is to copy and paste them into a personal document....or transcribe it somehow.

What I'd really like to see is the name of the forum (or an abbreviation thereof) along with the thread title. It's not always clear from the title which country a thread is about.

I use the browser bookmarks like Andrew does. I have folders for all potential trips and save helpful posts to them - just in case I actually start planning that trip. :)

These are all reasonable requests for enhancements, and while I'm sure they are welcome, I suspect these are not likely to be implemented anytime soon. So it's fine to ask for things like that, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them (note: I have no insider knowledge, just making a guess based on what I think the company's priorities are and how things work generally in IT).

Remember that the forum software is a custom setup (and it's not a direct, revenue-producing part of the business), and while adding small enhancements like those mentioned here is possible, those have real costs (both in development and in ongoing maintenance), and I think the company prefers to keep things simple (keeps costs down and aligned with the company's down-to-earth, modest approach to things, and lets them focus on their core missions).

@ Priscilla - If you notice that something obvious has changed recently (how your bookmarked topics are listed) I'd call that a possible bug and I'd report it as such (I don't have enough bookmarked topics to notice). It may have been an intentional change, or an unintended side-effect of some other change that was made. Either way, if you're confident something changed, I'm sure they would want to know, so ping the webmaster to be sure they see it.

I use my web browser's bookmarking feature too, but it was nice to have the ability to keep them here too.

Hmmm... I'm not tech savvy. I need to figure out how to access my "Portugal 2019" bookmark folder on my phone.
Is it easier if I have Google Chrome? I use Firefox on my Mac. Last year, one of my son's showed me how to save important documents ( copy of passport, train tickets, hotel reservations, etc..) on Google Drive. It would be nice to access my saved bookmarks during our upcoming trip too!

Maria,

I guess the only way to ensure you have them is to copy and paste them into a personal document....or transcribe it somehow.

Thanks Maria! I've been copying and pasting (onto a Word document), but still have more information to sort out!

Acraven,

What I'd really like to see is the name of the forum (or an abbreviation thereof) along with the thread title. It's not always clear from the title which country a thread is about.

You can actually see which country a thread is about when you click on "View All" at the bottom of your bookmarks.

Nancy,

I have folders for all potential trips and save helpful posts to them - just in case I actually start planning that trip. :)

I've been doing the same!

David,

I will notify the Webmaster. I just noted this change last night and thought it was strange since the IT Department is closed on the weekends.

You might find Chrome useful for this, as you likely already have a Google account since you set up a GDrive. You'd sign in to your Google account on Chrome on your Mac, and do the same in Chrome on your mobile device. Bookmarks would be synced across Chrome on both devices, so stuff you bookmark on your Mac would be readily available in Chrome on your phone.

Priscilla, Google Chrome can "sync" bookmarks between devices if you have Chrome on device.

Firefox has a similar feature. But you would need to install and use Firefox on your phone, too. And on both instances of Firefox, you'll need to login to the browser and save your info to their cloud (much more automatic than I'm making it sound).

@Priscilla- Thanks for the heads up this morning. I also discovered the same. I had been saving my bookmarks for an upcoming trip as well. I was aware of "view all" so I can sort through. May be going to plan B per suggestions. I value all the information I have compiled! Thanks to all!

I tried "View All," but I don't see any way to sort them by forum. Could be my low level of tech savvy.

I just email myself a link to the thread. In the title I put in a general remark like “London transportation “. and in the body of the email a little something to remind me of why I wanted to save it. In my email account I have a folder for travel resources.

Thanks 1885BD, and Andrew!

Thanks for explaining what I need to do in order to “sync” my bookmarks from my computer to my iPhone.

I have another question. Is it possible to select the bookmarks I want to “sync” onto my cell phone, or will ALL my bookmarks “sync” to my phone?

Janis,
I too may be going to plan B, or plan C. I like Rocket’s suggestion too!

Janet,

I tried "View All," but I don't see any way to sort them by forum. Could be my low level of tech savvy.

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to sort the bookmarks by forum by clicking on “View All”.

Rocket, I like your suggestion, thanks!

Okay, here’s what I've done in the past:
I save the link as a “bookmark” on my iPhone, and keep them organized in various folders.

Ha! I think I just learned something! Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Since my iPhone is actually a mini computer and the browser I use is “Safari”, I’m actually just saving my bookmarks on Safari (on my phone)
Duh!

I told you I was not tech savvy!!! Ha,ha, ha! 😊

Priscilla,
My pleasure!

In terms of what you sync... I'm an iPhone and Mac user myself, and my experience with Google is that it wants to... how shall we say... "do us the favor" of doing too much. hehe. Which is to say, it'll assume you want to sync everything, across apps and devices, and default to that. So it'll wanna sync all bookmarks.

The way I deal with this is by sorting my bookmarks how I want them. Thankfully, Chrome does let you essentially view certain bookmark folders by default and customize your bookmarks thoroughly. So I put bookmarks I care about and wanna access often in to my bookmarks bar, with various subfolders and directories branching off from that. You can do the same - set up different directories of bookmarks - your bookmarks bar, a mobile bookmarks category (that'll likely be created for you), a personal one, a work one if needed, etc. Then you can choose to view a particular directory by default or on demand. If and when you bookmark a page with Chrome, you'll initially get an option to sort it to a specific folder/directory. On your phone, when you bookmark, it'll initially wanna put it in your mobile bookmarks (which can be accessed on your computer) and you can move it around from there.

1885BD,
Thanks for the detailed explanation!
I definitely don’t need all the bookmarks I have in my computer!

Hmmm... I think I need to do some Spring cleaning and delete the ones I don’t need anymore...

What's funny is the whole bookmark syncing thing made me to the exact same thing - purge my bookmarks of old ones I'd never need, as well as be a bit more deliberate about adding any new ones!

Thanks for all the tips! I will take care of this when I return from vacation next week. In the meantime I "bookmarked" this thread!! ;) It's time to spring clean my bookmarks!
