What do I do next?

We are taking our annual trip with friends to Italy, staying near Poggibonsi in Tuscany for one week. We always go to Rome, then Tuscany, then somewhere else for another week to round out our trip. This year I dont have a clue where to go....I want to take my wife somewhere different. We have been to Europe many times and have been to almost every country in it. HELP!

Sicily might be it! I dont know......my sister lived there for 4 years, and I never visited her there, she always met me somewhere else Ive been to France 4x, but never to Provence or Languedoc/ Roussillon with my wife. We are in paris next month anyway Barcelona and rest of spain 5x Greece 1x Portugal 2x, but wife has never been Austria Slovenia Hungary Poland
Czech R and many more. The only place I haven't been in Europe is Amsterdam and Ireland. I can't really go there because my wife has and I haven't and we have this little contest about who has been to more countries, and she doesn't want me to extend my lead of countries visited. So I guess we can go a country that I have been to, but I can't go to one she has been to...Im rambling, I know. Its going to be Late September, and my wife does not like the cold! I guess Im feeling a little uninspired and I need someone to give me a magical idea!

Mark, sounds like you are well traveled and have had many wonderful travel experiences. Could you, perhaps, give us a quick list of where you have been (then readers could suggest OTHER ideas). And, we could also be prompted from your list of places we might want to check out on future trips. Doing a week in ONE place in Tuscany is on my bucket list sometime -- three days has been our max so far. Keep traveling -- wonderful way to create memories :)

Mark: Short answer - beautiful scenery, interesting food, and layers and layers of history and culture from all those invaders. I'm a big mosaics fan, so Monreale and the Villa Casale were musts. Ortigia and Erice were nice surprises. Long answer - my trip report is here: http://tinyurl.com/mktsae Does that list of countries include Ukraine?

Croatia? You could take a ferry from Bari or Ancona for a fascinating week.

What about Turkey? Loved Ephesus (sp?) and Istanbul. So much to see in Turkey. We only had one full day in each place, but would love to go back and spend more time sometime. We found it very welcoming and clean. Lots of history/beautiful places.

Maybe I should do Turkey! I have my 3 year old son Rocco with me, so I think it will be fine.

Another vote for Turkey and Ephesus in particular - a truly amazing place. The Turkish people were warm and welcoming and I never felt threatened as a female sometimes travelling alone. Whilst there we travelled by car to salt flats which were amazing to see. I've searched on the net to try to find them again. They are not the ones at Ankara. They were within a mornings drive of Ephesus. Does anyone know where I am talking of?

Mark, Just returned from a month long trip which included Turkey, 4 nights in Jordan and 2 nights in Beirut. Turkey is amazing. You really need more than 1 week there. You must go to Cappadocia and see the Chimmey Rocks and stay in a cave room at your hotel. Your son would enjoy it. The coast is amazing with little villages and beautiful water and sailing boats. Many Roman and other ruins throughout the coast.
