What do Hotels in Europe provide in your room?

This is a really silly question, but i wondered if hotels in Paris & Barcelona had an iron available in their rooms or if they had the option where you could call the front desk for one?
Thanks!

Just like here in the U.S., some do and some don't. You can find this out before booking a particular hotel. Or better yet, bring clothes that are wrinkle free.

Nothing like hanging your clothes out and hitting it with a spritz or 5 of water. It really takes most of the wrinkles out.

I rarely see an iron in rooms but (1) I am not looking for one and (2) I stay in 2 star type places that likely don't have them in the room.

Thanks for the info!
This is my first time traveling to Europe... and it's for my honeymoon!
We've been saving like mad and will be there March 2010!
I understand the weather will be "cool" so i figure the sweaters i'm packing will probably get a bit wrinkled.

Thanks again!

Many do, some do not. Doesn't give you much to go on. My experience is most do not and a few might. BUT that may be because we stay mostly in B&Bs and 3 stars or less hotels. However, we have always found the host/front desk has loaners. This was especially true for hair blowers/dryers. At one time these were not common in the room but recently have noticed most rooms now have blowers/dryers. However, the practice of not provide wash cloths or facial cloths still prevails. Also, hand soap can be iffy. And, of course, the little bottles of stuff are rarely seen.

This isn't Paris or Barcelona, but it might be representative of Europe.

The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) has a listing online of the requirements for stars for German hotels. There is a table of requirement along with the points awarded for having that requirement. More points, for instance, are required for four stars than for three. Some of the requirements are also mandatory for a certain number of stars. For 3 or 4 stars, for example, a German hotel must have a bilingual (German/English) "staff", whatever that means. (I was in a 3 star hotel where only the manager, who was there during the day, spoke fluent English. The night clerk spoke very little and no one else that I ever met spoke any English.)

The only requirement I could find reqarding irons or ironing was that for 3 or more stars, the hotel had to provide ironing service. Nowhere did it specify that a hotel had to provide an iron for guest use.

Gina, have a wonderful time, but don't fret about ironing. Try to take clothes that are as wrinkle free as possible, and just make sure to spritz them the night before with a bit of water and hang or stretch out for the next day's wearing....you'll be surprised how little a few wrinkles matter.

It really depends on the hotel. I stay in more modest accomodations on vacation and rarely see an iron. I've seen them at nicer hotels (when traveling on business). I pack as wrinkle free as possible, however, so rarely use them (although I love the pants presses in the UK).

I can’t recall any of the budget lodgings I’ve visited anywhere having irons in the room, but many had one available at their front desk (not all - B&Bs/guest houses, for example, may not have an iron or a front desk). Travel irons with a dual voltage switch can be small and light, but I prefer to just borrow an iron if needed. If you pack one, don’t forget the appropriate adapter. If it’s important to you, just ask about irons while inquiring about rates via e-mail. Happy travels.
