Just have a staycation and once all this mess is over we can all go travelling again

Geez Louise, I was hoping COVID would abate during the summer before a likely resurgence in the fall, but it looks like we're still in the first stage and the numbers are rising as the states reopen. I've been doing a "staycation" and working from home since March. I've seen everything around here numerous times. Ready for a change in scenery. Maybe Pennsylvania Dutch country since it's now in the Green phase. If the poop hits the fan I'll just turn around and drive back home.

I'm guessing if there's a vaccine before the summer of 2021 the masses will be flooding Europe in record numbers. Maybe 2022, but think of everyone holding off on their travel plans along with the regularly scheduled trips. Wow.

Yes, I'm worried about getting things booked quickly if there's a vaccine next year. I am not willing to speculate about when that might happen and book things now, even fully cancelable things. Will all the affordable hotel rooms get vacuumed up while I'm trying to buy an airline ticket? Will all the discounted rail fares disappear overnight? I think I need to have some back-up plans in mind for use if costs really spike at some of my planned destinations or there are sell-outs affecting trains, ships and hotels. It seems to me that the areas with high demand/low supply even in normal times will be the diciest. Based on my research that would include the Scottish islands and highlands and the Norwegian fjord country.

It will perhaps help somewhat if Europeans are able to travel the continent (and the UK) this summer--less pent-up demand next year.

I know Westeros is wide open for tourists now. Tours of the Dragon Pit are booked weeks ahead of time.

acraven, maybe do your research on airfare and hotels, and when you're ready to make a decision get after it and reserve both in a day or two. I'm betting on pent-up demand for travel in 2021 and/or 2022 depending on when a vaccine is available. The same with sports.

I'm researching now, BigMike, but I don't think it's possible to be very sure what costs and transportation schedules will be like next year with so much shut down at the moment. What I'm working on now is deciding where I want to go, what I want to do at each destination and how many days I'll need to spend there. Next I'll make a list of probably-affordable hotels at each stop to speed up the final decision-making process.

I'm really not sure what to do about my idea to spend some time on one of the Hurtigruten coastal ships in Norway. That's not looking like a particularly safe transportation choice at the moment. Between that and limited capacity on some of the fjord-area transportation, I'm wondering whether I'll end up having to drop Norway from the 2021 trip or limit it to Oslo and perhaps Bergen. Of course, one could argue that the overnight ferries so often used between the Nordic and Baltic capital cities are questionable as well.

I am taking early retirement on the 30th September and was hoping to have trips booked for October and November as well as one for January by now but at the moment I am making no commitment to travel or booking anything till things become much clearer.

I see we have not heard anything from the OP in over 2 weeks, and the OP was a one-time poster. Still, the better question should have been what country is SAFE at the moment. Open has nothing to do with this.
