What about the swine flu?

I am getting concerned about not being able to go to Europe in just a little over two weeks because of concerns about the flu outbreak. Has anyone had experience with the SARS virus or the bird flu and traveling a few years ago? How did ETTBD handle things/

You're more likely to get swine flu in Colorado than in Europe. Go and have a good time. Stop worrying.

If you are worried that you would be denied entry into Europe, a quarantine of an entire country, region or state would be without precedent. Passengers from Mexico at this time are not being denied entry into the EU, but they are getting informal health screens. In situations of disease outbreak, your best source of information will always be the Centers For Disease Control website,or other public health agencies:
http://www.cdc.gov
The CDC website has a helpful travel advisory.
The media tends to sensationalize these stories without providing the proper context, so take their reporting with a grain of salt.

If you are worried about getting sick while traveling, just remember these tips, which are helpful anywhere: the most effective way to prevent infection is to avoid close contact with others who are obviously sick and to wash your hands frequently. Those little travel-sized bottles of sanitizing gel are perfect.

I think Brenda is concerned about entry into the EU. I don't know what's going to happen in a couple of weeks, I would just keep a close eye on the news and try not to get sick from ANYTHING in the next couple weeks. Wash your hands like crazy, hide out in your house if you must, do whatever you can do, because if they start screening passengers and you have a fever due to something else, you might be denied entry.

What's happening right now is EU aiport staff have been told to take a very close look at passengers arriving from Mexico and other parts of the world where a swine flu outbreak has been reported. They're supposed to look if those passengers look fatigued or sick in any other way to take them aside for a medical check. That's it so far. Not sure if the procedure won't change in a couple of days...

Yes, I am more worried about not being admitted into other countries than becoming sick. You can bet that I'll be washing my hands ALLOT. Thanks for the websites and info.

Well... how many of us do NOT look fatigued after flying across the Atlantic in coach! LOL! We may all be being examined. Personally I think I look pretty rough when I land!

However, if your remember the Bird Flu mess a few yearsa ago they did try to weed out folks who looked feverish, were coughing excessively etc.

I remember there were temperature sensitive detectors used in Asian airports during the SARS and bird flu epidemics. I assume similar detectors may come into use if this outbreak continues. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if use of that kind of equipment started to become standard during entry into a country.

Brenda, do you realize how many thousands of people travel across the Atlantic every day? If the EU stopped Americans from entering, their economy would be in terrible trouble.

No, they might give you a second look if you seem sick, but they will not block everyone from entering.

I remember during the SARS outbreak cruise ships not allowing people who had flown through certain cities in Canada onboard their ships.
