Son going to France for 3 weeks this summer. He has a wells fargo account. Will he have access to ATMs? I know Bank of America can be used in Europe, just not sure about Wells Fargo.
He should be able to use any ATM with the same credit card logo as the Wells Fargo card (I believe it's Visa). There may be a small fee, but I wouldn't expect to find Wells Fargo in Europe. They make no mention of foreign branches and locations.
Here is Well Fargo's suggestions if he has trouble:

Edit later to add: Keep in mind even BofA doesn't have BofA ATMs in Europe, but rather partner banks in a few countries (including the UK, Germany, and France). If you use a BofA card at one of the partner bank ATMs, there is no additional fee (it's like using a BofA ATM). He may also want to consider opening a "travel account" to use as his primary account while abroad and use the card with the higher fees as back-up should anything happen (card blocked because it's being used abroad and the bank didn't notice the warning it would be, card lost or stolen, card eaten by a machine, etc.).
thank you all for your help. :)
Steve's right-we have a Wells card and never use it outside the U.S. because of the fees-I use my debit card from the credit union-1% is the charge, period.
Also, since he is a young adult, he probably not be taking out large amounts, but 50-60Euros at a time, and the fees will bury you.
I was told last week by the branch mgr at my BoA that when using BNP Bank ATM's in France, and I know from experience that they are everywhere, there's no ATM fee - only 1% conversion fee.
We've used our BoA ATM card at BNP ATM's in France for the last 5 trips and have never had a problem.
It is very important the you notify your bank of his departure and return date to the States. Call the phone # on back of card and reconfirm a few days prior to his departure. Just to make sure they DO have the information.
I'd call twice. I've notified my normal bank that I'll be gone, and will call and remind them again a few days before I go. I will do the same with the travel account.
Nathalie - Yes, your son will have access to ATMs in France. Have him contact the bank to let them know his travel dates. Also he may want to request an increase in his ATM daily withdrawl limit.
If it's a debit card, it will have either a Visa or Mastercard logo on it. If it has one of those, it will work at virtually every ATM in Europe.
If it doesn't have a Visa or MC logo, it's an ATM card rather than a debit. It will still work at many locations that are part of the same networks as Wells Fargo (share the same network logos his card shows) but won't be nearly as universal.
At least some Wells Fargo PMA customers have no markup or transaction fees at foreign ATM's.
Comparisons of debit/credit card foreign currency fees are here: http://flyerguide.com/wiki/index.php/Credit/Debit/ATM_Cards_and_Foreign_Exchange . Note that Wells Fargo's fees are as bad as they get, tied for last place on the list. It is worth changing just on the principle of the thing.
Wells Fargo offers a "PMA Package" that allows up to 4 free international ATM transactions per billing period.

I understand the debit card vs credit card fees; however, how about a cash card under a VISA logo. Would the fees be limited to only the ATM fee?
