Weird moment in hotel

We are just waking from our first night in Ljubljana.

The hotel room has a phone attached to a tablet computer. During the night it said a word we didn't understand, then clearly we both heard it say "connecting". I got paranoid that someone could watch us through it so we draped a shirt over it. The phone was definitely hung up properly.

Any idea what was connecting?

Andrea,

Having a phone connected to a tablet computer seems like a somewhat unorthodox arrangement. Perhaps the hotel uses some kind of VOIP system, and the phone briefly lost connection to the Router, forcing it to reconnect?

I'd suggest asking the desk staff what it is, and get some tips on how to use it. I would probably also have draped a towel over the camera.

Just curious, are you there to join a tour?

Can you disconnect the tablet from the phone? Agree, that you should mention it to the front desk staff.

Some hotels use a tablet to control things in the room......lights, thermostat, etc. These tablets, like some thermostats, are connected to a main control panel in the hotel. It was probably being rebooted and reconnecting to the main computer.

A few weeks ago, I was in a hotel where I couldn't get the temperature below a certain level. I mentioned this to the people at reception. They looked at their computer, told me the temperature in my room, and said they could adjust it.

I don't think they were spying on you. But still, you might as well ask.

BTW, what was the word?

We asked at main desk. They said the thunderstorms knocked off the wifi so it would just be reconnecting. They said we can power it down if we want. I might still cover the camera; it freaks me out a bit with it being at the foot of the bed.

BigMike, it's probably a range of temperatures that the hotel sets for each room, and if you need the temperature outside that range, then you can call for an adjustment. That happened to me in Scotland - the temperature would only go down to 19 degrees Celsius (about 66F). I didn't need it any cooler than that (I just adjusting it) but that's the general idea.

I'm an architect. The new computerized systems can be sneaky. There is a temperature sensor with a know that will usually turn at least 180 degrees implying a wide temperature range when in effect tat range is limited by the management to what ever they want. Could br 5 degrees, could be 1 degree, but twisting that kbob all the way to the left makes the user feel empowered. 😳

Andrea, I saw the phone tablet, so I covered it with a couple of Kleenex! 😉. I immediately remembered your post about the hotel.
