Week Long Base Camp Cities

In review of the subject, you can think of so many reasons why you can stay in one city for a week. The purpose of the query is to get your recommendation on cities you feel would make a great base camp where my daughter (14) and I can see the local history and do day trips.

I prefer the base camp process versus traveling from city to city every two days or every day. I like to spend the night in the same bed for the week.

My last trip, I spent a week in Rome and a week in Sorrento. I really enjoyed a week in Sorrento and visiting the surrounding area.

I'm open to any city in the world, but I assume my daughter wants to shop also.

London makes an awesome base city! Your daughter will love the shopping- both designer stores, traditional dept. stores and markets galore (take her to Camden and Covent Garden). Here is a link to an article I wrote about basing yourself in London and doing day trips

There's arts, history, culture, theatre, people watching, etc. in London!

If you are interested in Scotland, Edinburgh or Inverness are good choices (I prefer Inverness).
I'd suggest you consider Vienna, Munich or Salzburg if you are intersted in "the continent".

My vote is for Munich. From there you can day trip to the Alps, visit stunning castles, pretend your part of the Von Trapp family in Salzburg, and visit Dachau-while different than the other choices, it is well worth a visit. Of course, that is not even mentioning all there is to do in Munich- from history, to art, to beer halls, to biking in the English Gardens. Any chance I could tag along...just writing this makes me want to go back.

Vienna is a great one. So much to do there, and so much shopping. Within a 2-3 hours by train you are in Salzburg, or Bratislava, Innsbruck, the Alps. Within 5 or so hours you've got Munich, and the Bavarian Lake District (Castle Neuschwanstien), Slovenia (Bled, the Caves), Prague, Northern Italy (Venice/Treiste, etc), Switzerland, Croatia, the Dalmation coast... and lots of other places.

The trains run very frequent out of Vienna and are really inexpensive. Bus/plane travel is pretty easy too.

As mentioned, London is another great one.

Amsterdam or Bruges are great places if you want to explore than corner of Europe as well. Easy access to Northern France/Germany and even England.

I'm with Connie on Munich. From there you have access to Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland. Chimsee (a lake) with its island palace is a very easy day-trip a 14-year-old would enjoy. Salzburg is easily do-able (90 minutes by train), although that merits an overnightbecause there's so much to see/do. Then there's all the history in and around Munich including Dachau and King Ludwig's "Disneyland" castle. And if you want to stretch away from Munich a little, there's Augsburg, Regensburg, and (a little farther) Nurenberg. Lake Constance is not too far. And there's Garmisch in the Bavairan Alps and Innsbruck in the Austrian Alps. The trains make it all so easy.

If you hadn't done Italy, I'd say Florence. It's easy to get to Siena and the Tuscany countryside. There are fascinating towns nearby, like Fiesole. Bus and train will get you around. And, of course, Florence itself is packed with gems. There is not the topographical variety you would find in the Munich area (mountains, lakes, farmland), but Florence and environs is culturally and historically richer.

I second London...you can do day trips to Bath, York, the Cotswalds, Oxford, Cambridge, even Paris. So much to see, lots of shopping, great theater.

I've done weeks in London quite a few times. Normally in hotels but next time I'm going to rent an apartment.

Normally, I'd say Rome but since you've already done that, I'll cast my vote to London.

London and Munich are both great for home bases, especially in the summer. You can’t go wrong with either of these. Madrid is another one to consider, although summer travel will be hot and dry. From there, one can easily access Toledo, Segovia, Avila, and more for day trips.

London and/or Munich are my choices. So many opportunities for day trips with a great variety of things to see and do.
