I'm thinking of staying in Gimmelwald, Switzerland starting June 11 for 4 days or so where I'd be hiking. Is this too early? If it is, where can I hike and get views of the mountains etc?
The weather in big mountains such as the Alps is challenging to forecast and depends on factors specific to your hikes, such as the elevation and time of day. Temps drop about 3.5 degrees F for every thousand feet of elevation gain. In general, afternoons are often more cloudy than mornings. But these are just generalizations, weather forecasting in big mountains is often a roll of the dice.
We were there last year on the exxact same days....it was sunny and warm 65' F three of four days- and keep in mind what a cool summer it was last year ! enjoy!
We've been there several different occasions between late May and mid-June. The weather has always been beautiful with lots of green grass, wildflowers...no, it's not too early.
You'll likely see some rain and fog, but otherwise, should be fine.
Only time I've been to the BO in mid-summer was in 2003... the year of the heat wave in central Europe. It was 85+ in Interlaken for three days -- staying well above 75, even in Gimmelwald, even after dark. If memory serves, it was almost 70 at the top of the Schilthorn the afternoon we went up there.
Four days later we were in Munich -- were it crested 100 F for two days...
On other trips to the BO we've done May, September, October, and November -- May and June were my favorites.
We were there June 18-20 last summer and Interlachen was almost 90 F. We took the cable car past Gimmelwald to Murren and it was 65 F just a few hours later. The next day it rained lightly all day and you couldn't see across the valley to the mountains on the other side. The owner of our B&B was happy though - apparently it had hardly rained at all the previous month, so....
...the bottom line is that it's really tough to predict. But we enjoyed our time there anyway.
