See the thread a couple posts down about the strange weather patterns we've experienced this year. But unless "thermals" has a different meaning in kiwi English than Yank English, I would say leave them at home.

It's a perfect time to visit. The weather is good for travel and there are plenty of harvest activities. Normally, I'd expect nice days and cool nights. Days should be good for short sleeve, use your rain shell as a windbreaker if needed. I'd plan on layering a shirt, light sweater and rain shell at night. You won't need gloves, scarf, thermals, hat or heavy layers unless it's a really unusual year. If it does turn out to be really cold, you can always stop by a department store during your trip rather than pack extra.

Thank you for those comments most helpful, thermals in NZ are lightweight merinos not too hot but keep the chill off. we wear them under ski gear. Lisa
