Weather in the Alps

I have been watching webcam photos of Mont Blanc, the Eiger and the Matterhorn almost daily for months. It looks to me like seeing anything at all is really hit or miss, but the the Matterhorn seems to be in view a lot more that the others. Am I right or do I just look at the wrong time of day?

We've been to the Jungfrau 3 or 4 times, Matterhorn once and we have always been met with sunshine and blue skies during our summer visits.

If your going to be visiting any peak, you must go EARLY in the morning, that is when the skies are usually clear. My noon the peaks are almost always covered by clouds, making a trip to the top a waste of time and money.

Well, I don't think Kent is planning n going to the top of any of those three. As for seeing them from various viewpoints---it is hit or miss as you say. You can hit a stretch of cloudy weather anytime. That said, we had clear views of Mont Blance 5 days out of 6; the Matterhorn partial views on 3 days of 4 (and it constantly changed throughout the day, often clearing off late in the afternoon). Only saw the whole Matterhorn the morning we left---worth waiting for, as it is truly dazzling. I don't know where the Eiger webcam is, but we've always been able to look up at the Eiger from Grindelwald.

I guess it depends, like in any snowy area.
I've been to Chamonix in August, a few years ago, and the weather was nice, not too warm, t-shirt comfort. But we took took the cabin up in the mountains, and it was cold, a lot of snow, but sunny.
I guess around noon should be the best time to go.

Morning is usually your best chance of getting a good view, although there are no guarantees. The only rule seems to be that the weather is unpredictable and can change in minutes. Mt. McKinley in Alaska is probably one of the most infamous examples ("I spent all this money and all I saw were a bunch of clouds!")

Just got back from Berner Oberland hiking for 10 days. We had beautiful sunny days, some drizzel days, some with a bit of both. AM is usually cooler and in the valleys fogged in, but the fogs burn off quickly in the late AM. The clouds can come back as others described in the later after noon as the fogs fill the valley back up. Just pick a good late summer time and go for a few days - you should be fine in Aug/Sept!

It is hit or miss. One day that we were in Lauterbrunnen, it suddenly cleared up so we hopped on the gondola to the Schiltorn first thing in the morning. It clouded over about 2 minutes after we got up there (got our pics though! :), then it started snowing! A snowball fight in the middle of August at the top of the Alps was fun and quite memorable!!

Basically you have to take it one day at a time...I checked all the webcams before leaving - some days great weather & some days bad, so the truth is, you just never know! Maybe our prayers for good weather on our last night helped us... :)
