Weather in September/October

Weather charts and stats on the web are fine; how about some personal observations? Traveling to Paris beginning third week in September then on to Venice, Florence, Rome and ending in London over the next three weeks.

What’s the weather going to be like? Warm days, cool nights? Rain? Long sleeves or short? Shorts or long pants?

I've traveled to these places at this time of year (Sept-Oct) for the past few years. The weather has been very agreeable, not hot and not cold. Evenings may be cooler than they would be in summer, but I wouldn't expect anything but mild weather. It could rain, especially in Paris or London. I wouldn't take shorts; short sleeves optional. I always travel with a light rain coat and a couple of extra layers (cotton turtle neck and sweater) just in case.

I usually take a mix of long and short sleeves, maybe 2 each. Layering with undershirts works. Long pants. Take breaks if its hot or buy shorts there.

There have been recent posts on the Helpline saying that the only men in Italy wearing shorts were tourists (and usually American tourists). And you can't get into a duomo/cathedral wearing shorts. I know, it doesn't mean one can't wear them, just thought I'd mention it. You can find these posts by using the search box in upper right corner of this site.

I have only been to Italy once in September but the weather was lovely. Mild sunny days and only one half day of rain in the 10 days we were there. The nights were a little cooler. Layers are the go. As you are getting closer to winter it may be cooling down.

...and don't forget a light jacket/sweater/fleece. Toss-up whether to take an umbrella or buy one if you need to.
