We just booked a room at Gianni Franzi in Vernazza for the last week of May and I was told there is no a/c. Does it cool down at night? I live in Houston so I'm used to heat and humidity but we have a/c everywhere... Your feedback is greatly appreciated!
Sorry I can't give you specific about temperatures. But what I CAN offer is that even if it does cool down at night there are typically no screens over windows so that if you open the windows at night you may have to fight with other critters like mosquitos.
I was in Vernazza during the third week of May last year. It was cool. We needed light jackets even during the day. We slept with the windows open and never saw or felt one bug of any kind.
My wife and I spent a week in an apartment in Vernazza in March 2001. Weather was mild, nights comfortable under a blanket.
You may wish for AC during the day in May, but you won't suffer. Hiking the trail will be pleasant.
Here's the weather chart for that area by month: http://weather.yahoo.com/La-Spezia-Italy/ITXX0033/statistics.htmlMay 70 is average daily high, 53 is avg daily low/
I've been in May and there was no need for a/c (or screens--we never saw a bug).
Stayed in Manarola in September which I imagineis much like May. Did not miss the airconditioner and only bugs we saw were non-flying ants which were quickly dealt with by the management.
Keep in mind too that the construction of the houses is brick/block/masonry...or dug into the cliffs, so they tend to stay cooler well into the summer. I do not think you will have a problem.
We stayed at Gianni Franzi in late October 2008. It was hot in our room. Maybe the weather was unusually warm when we were there, I don't know. We had a balcony and could see the sea from our room, but we really didn't get any breezes to cool things down at night.
Bottom line: I liked the room, my husband didn't, but we both agreed that we would not want to stay there during warm weather.
