Weather in Brussels

My wife and I are considering a trip to Brussels. Is the weather better in April or September? Also what other cities should we see other than Brugge? Thanks in advance.

September is usually consistently on the warmer and drier side. April can be warm and dry or cold and wet.

Check out Gent as well. If you travel in September, also consider a visit to the Belgian coast.

You might want to go to "RS Tours > Holland & Belgium > Tour Weather (in the lower right hand corner)" for a "guess" of the average temperatures for Brussels for the whole year.

Not September, but I was in Brussels in very early October. It was mostly cloudy with maybe a light shower while we were there, and temps were in the 50s.

We are going back next May, and in addition to Brugge, we plan to visit Poperinge and Ieper - I am anticipating these will be great places to visit if you are also interested in WWI history and trappist beer :)

We were in Bruges for a week in early April this year. We got everything except warm: sunny, cloudy, light rain, wind, you name it. However, on the sunny and not windy days, it was pleasant enough to be out and about without a lot of extra layers. The trees were just barely beginning to leaf out, but it was a long winter this year.

"but it was a long winter this year." Lo isn't kidding about that. Although the temperature fluctuated throughout the spring, I didn't put my winter jacket away for the season until early June this past year. Now, that's not typical, but it shows you how widely the temperature can vary from year to year.

A key thing to remember about spring and fall temperatures north of the Alps- because these are transitional seasons, the yearly historical averages conceal a very wide range of temperatures. So, just looking at the average isn't going to be terribly helpful. I think it would be more useful if weather charts also included the standard deviation in addition to the monthly mean.

The weather in Belgium varies season to season, obviously, but it also varies incredibly throughout the day. There is no constant. I would chose September since April tends to be rainier. Brussels, Ghent, Brugge are the standard places to visit but I really like Antwerp (the train station is incredible). The coast is beautiful and so are the Ardennes. Bouillon is a cool medieval village with a great castle. You are only a few hours away from Amsterdam, The Hague, Paris, Maastricht, Monschau.
