Wearing Red in Venice

Here's a funny question. Is there anything wrong with wearing red clothing in Venice? My wife recently purchased a very nice red cape type fleece coat. We came across a Venice websight with photos of somebody wearing red, and the caption seemed to be making fun of that person. Any thoughts?

Since practically everyone you'll see in Venice is a tourist or comes in to work from off the island, I can't imagine there's such a widespread convention of anything like that. Remember, you'll be there with tour groups with people wearing umbrella hats. Hard to believe red clothing would stand out in the everyday circus that is Venice tourism.

As long as you don't wear white after Labor Day, you'll be fine.

There is a movie called "Don't Look Now" which heavily features a little red-clad Venetian figure. Not sure if this has anything to do with what you saw or if it's wrong to wear red. I think you'll be okay.

Well, when I went to Carnavale in Venice a few years ago I haad an antique red velvet cloak that I had bought in Savannah (and it was supposedly worn by a lady of the evening) I wore it in Venice along with my beautiful mask and I wasn't scorned!!! But, I haven't been back since so I hope there aren't photos of me being made fun of ...or maybe there are.
Wear the cape and have a magical time in Venice, after all its the city of costumes.

This is a more valid question than it seems on the surface. I found myself in Venice wearing a grass green t-shirt on the same day as a big gathering of protestors who wear green as part of their symbol for the independence movement for the North of Italy. I definitely looked like part of their group and they were there in the thousands. I was worried that if violence broke out near me I could find myself in the middle of it.

OK - related red clothing or not, I hold Jim and Laurel responsible for my newest addiction - "Venice Daily Photo"...like I need another one... So, was Laurel's site the one?

Oh great, now that I've seen that blog, I'm not going to get anything accomplished this evening! If this was the site Jim's wife saw, I think the point was that it is unusual to see people wearing red. Nothing wrong with it. And red is one of the colors in the umbrella hats certain tour group members wear.

Now I have to go through my photos from all my trips to Venice in search of the red clothes! Could be a theme here, or maybe its some kind of cult or secret society....

Hi All, Yes, venicedailyphoto.blogspot.com/ is the website I was referring to. It's a good one. We're off to Italy tomorrow morning. Driving from the Sacramento area to San Francisco, fly to Amsterdam, then to Marco Polo. We're all packed and ready to go!!! After all of the comments (THANKS), my wife is bringing her red cape/coat. No baggy cargo pants or muscle shirts have been packed (we don't own any...), and no white. After four nights in Venice, we train to Bologna for a couple of days, then get a car and drive to Montepulciano where we will spend a week enjoying the wine, food, countryside, and the wonderful people. It's been 12 years since we've been to Italy, so we are really looking forward to it. Take care everybody, and thanks again.

Arrived Bologna from Venice today. Wearing red was no problem, particularly this time of year around Carnivale - everybody was too busy looking at people in brightly colored costumes...
