Thanks for the comments. I may just leave them in my carry on and wear tennis shoes on the flight.

^^^ or at least where the tennis shoes thru screening. Once you are thru the screening you can change the shoes if you want.

But I don't think this item is on the prohibited list. And that's the key issue. For this reason, assuming these shoes are in your carry-on, during the screening of your carry-on the TSA equipment will detect the metal screen in your carry-on - if they don't see this kind of item very often, possibly they'll ask you to take the item out so they can identify it - and if this is an item with which TSA is familiar, they'll probably just look at them in the image screener and let them pass. Either way, it shouldn't be a problem.

As far as I know, only gel insoles are prohibited, and only as a wear-on or carry-on item. The shoes do have to come off and go through the x-ray if you plan to wear them on the plane.
