Wanted to say thank you

Hi everyone - As I'm sure it's been already been said, my entire 16 day first europe vacation has been canceled. My daughters skating team had to forfeit the competition. We were scheduled to travel to London, Paris, Toulouse, Cinque Terre, Pisa, then finally Rome. We've tried for over a week, finally today I had to say I wanted a refund, not a reschedule when I got the call from American Airlines. I am sadder than I think I ever have been in my life. Thanks to all the wonderful people here on these boards that helped me choose everything from hotels to locations to what shoes to bring! This trip took me 44 years to get accomplished, I sure hope the next one happens a little quicker.

I was looking forward to coming back here and offering any help I could give propective travlers with all I would learn on this first trip. Not much help when I didn't get to go.
Thank you again for all your help, you are a great group of knowledgable folks.

Chris

Chris,

I'm truly sorry that you had to cancel your much anticipated trip.

If you're able to get some more holiday time, my suggestion would be to start planning another trip right away, perhaps for Sept./Oct. You could use the same Itinerary, since you've got it mostly worked out already.

It took me many years to make my first trip a reality (due to a variety of factors - it's a long story). I found that it was important to "keep the dream alive" and the planning helped to do that. Of course, watching Rick's TV shows and attending several Travel Festivals at ETBD helped also.

Good luck!

Chris, I can see how heartbroken you are and I feel terrible for you. I also hope you are able to reschedule what would have proved to be a fantastic trip. Best wishes!!

Hi Chris, as Ken said, keep the dream. Start making some plans, like your #1 and #2 places you want to see, things you want to see and do there, etc. Even if you don't know when you will get there. I'm always reading, reseaching, etc., what I want to see and do on my next trip, and I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to make that trip. I'm sure that you will make it to Europe.

I too am so sorry for you Chris. What a disappointment! We are scheduled to go in May and I've been thinking 'OK, what if we can't, where else could we go?' and nothing even comes close to sounding satisfying. Don't let all the hard work you did go to waste though ~ as others have said, start planning your next trip. I bet it'll be even better! ((hugs))

Chris, so sorry for you but good things will happen. I had to cancel 2 years ago because of the poor $ value and my getting laid off. I continued to plan for 2009 and got to go in Sept. Had a wonderful time, and even got to stay longer than the earlier trip I cancelled. Just keep positive thoughts and work for a future trip. It will happen.

That's such a shame Chris, and I'm sorry you've had to cancel.

I'd like to add my condolences for your canceled trip. If that had happened to me, I would not be very happy either. Fortunately, I haven't yet planned my trip to Europe for this year, so I have not been affected by the volcano travel fiasco.

We have a friend staying with us who works for Nokia (the cell phone manufacturer) in Helsinki, who was attending a conference in Atlanta when the volcano blew. After about five days of waiting, he still couldn't get back to Europe, so he flew to San Francisco to stay with us. Luckily, the company has offices here where he can work.

For a lot of people around the world, however, their luck has not been so good. People can't get home to go back to work and are having to pay extra hotel bills they didn't anticipate. The personal economic cost of this disaster has been enormous.

So, count your blessings that you are home and didn't get caught in all that travel chaos!

Chris, I'm sorry you had to cancel but another thing you can learn here is that we're always planning our next trip. Maybe that'll make the cancelation easier to take.

THanks all - I think the most disappointing thing for us was my daughters skate team had to withdrawl from the World Championships - the initial reason for the trip - Everyone was very disappointed. I am grateful that I was "stuck" in my own home in my own bed, versus being at the airport, or being somewhere else & trying to find a safe place for my family to stay.

In the end - we decided after being cancelled 6 times - to take a trip anyway - to Cancun! We got the dang passports to travel out of the US. So we spent a week in Cancun - not exactly Cinque Terre or Paris, but it was relaxing and gave us a chance to regroup as a family. We visited Tulum, and my daughters & I all got mayan pendants - Mine says "dream", my oldests says "believe" and my youngest says "wish" - we all know what we're dreaming, believing and wishing for so it made sense. We WILL get there someday, just not sure when right now. I have my plan in my head of how many days I need to see what I want to see. Just have to wait. We had saved/spent 12K on the trip in total, spent $3500 going to Mexico, I'm leaving the rest of the money in the vacation account & just gonna keep adding to it.

Still plan on hanging around here & reading & browsing.

Thanks
Chris
