My wife and I will be traveling in Germany and Italy soon. I read a recommendation that we use a VPN for iphone and our computer while we are there. My wife will be checking her work while there and we were wondering if the added security was necessary. Any thoughts or recommendations?

We use a VPN almost all the time. We originally got it so we could watch HULU outside of the US. I don't think you'll need it for security as much as possibly getting access to some internet resources you can't get outside the US. Companies I know many use are: unblockus.com and viscosity.com
I used this company while I was in China a couple months ago and it worked great:
But it wasn't for security concerns, just to circumvent govt. censorship of certain sites and to stream US sites like HBO and ESPN.
If by "checking her work" your wife is simply going to be emailing her colleagues, VPN is a bit of overkill, unless it's cloak and dagger stuff;)
I use a free version of HotSpot Shield, but just to have access to some US websites (cbs.com) or the US version of Yahoo. I check email on whatever wifi I am on at the time, without engaging HotSpot Shield.
