Visiting Italy in November, Any tips?

My husband and I will be visiting Italy this November 8-16th, flight time not included. Does anyone out there have any ideas or suggestions on where to spend our 8 days? We plan on visiting Rome 1st, then Florence->Venice -> Milan. How should we divide our time? Are there any breathtaking sights to see that are not in our planned itinerary? I love to take pictures of amazing architecture, try new things and be adventerous, but I'm not into the club/party life. I want to get the best of Italy in those 8 days, but I need a little guidance from residents or recent travelors from Italy. Can anyone help?
Regards,
Sally

Arriving Rome 8am on Nov 8th, flying out of Milan 1pm on 16th.1)That's 8 full days and nights not including the 16th.2)In Italy, if trains go there then go by train and trains efficiently serve all of your destinations.3) 8 days is barely sufficient to get a quick overview of Rome, and see a fair amount of Florence & Venice.4)It's tempting to add too many destinations under the assumption that you won't be back; this is understandable but you can only do so much in 8 days without turning the entire trip into a death march to exhaustion: don't add more destinations.5) You'll be more tired than you think after flying all night and arriving in Rome early on the 8th so the 8th will basically count as a 1/2 day in terms of things you will have the energy to see, most likely. You need the 8th and 9th and part of the 10th to get a quick overview of Rome. 6) Suggest leaving Rome on the late afternoon of the 10th and taking the train to Florence. I would give Florence at least 2 full days, that would be the 11th and 12th.7) You can take the train from Florence to Venice on the morning of the 13th, try to get there by noon.8) Now you have a decision to make that affects the amount of time you spend in Venice and so we skip ahead to your departure time of 1 pm on Nov 16 out of Milan. Milan has 2 airports, I'm assuming you're leaving out of the one called Malpensa, note that it's 30 miles west of the Milan Centrale train station in downtown Milan and takes an hour to get to, from the train station, under normal conditions. Working backward you can see that you want to sleep either in central Milan or out at the airport the night of the 15th.9) The task is to get from Venice, where you're showing up at noon on the 13th, to Milan to sleep on the night of the 15th. It's 3 hours by train from Venice to Central Milan.

(continued)10) Your choice is to do something quick in Milan or just pass through there on your way to an airport hotel 30 miles out of town on the night of the 15th. The above considerations will affect how much time you have in Venice.11) You could get an extra half day in Venice by going from Florence to Venice on the evening of the 12th but make sure that your Venice accommodations are OK with a late arrival. That would give you a full day on the 13th and a full day on the 14th in Venice, and a partial day on the 15th. On the 15th you can decide whether you want to spend more time in Venice or some time in Milan sightseeing prior to sleeping in Milan, either in central Milan or out at the airport on the night of the 15th. My own opinion would be to spend more time in Venice.I think it would be too risky for you to sleep in Venice on the 15th. Milan does not have anywhere near the "touristic value" to you of Rome, Florence, or Florence, given the 8 days you have. If you choose to sleep in Central Milan the night of the 15th, you may have time to see the Duomo, including its roof, and the Galleria. It would be tempting for you to try to arrange to see the Last Supper by Leonardo but you will have to reserve a time slot, it takes some effort and you have to do it in advance from here. That is a separate topic that you can look at previous discussions of by using the search box in the upper right corner and searching on "Last Supper."

Make sure you don't waste time in line while in Florence. Get reservations for the Acedemia and Uffizi before you get in line. In November, making your reservations 24 to 48 hours ahead of your visit should be plenty.

In Venice, be sure to visit the Duomo San Marco when the interior lights are on. When lit the gold glass tile mosaics are an amazing site. Also, plan at least one night in Venice. When the streets and canals are quiet, it's really special.
