Visa check at DTW

So I am waiting for my delayed (2.5 hours) flight to board at DTW when I am summoned to the podium to show my passport.

I am told I need a visa since I am flying into MXP and out of LHR 100 days later (more than 90 days). I had to show my EasyJet ticket from MXP to LHR for 3 August to get a visa override.

It may be that the days of one-way and open-return tickets are over, or was this event just a hiccup?

Must be Delta. Oh dear, this is not right! What if you had be planning to take a ferry?

Delta.

Now waiting to board...1:45 to connect through JFK. Prayers welcome.

And in another thread we read of someone being denied boarding because the husband's passport had less than three months left on it. They had to lose a day from their already short trip to get expedited renewal.

Seems like the airlines are being more rigorous than usual. Or maybe this is just a coincidence.

Oh good grief. Here's hoping you sail thru!!

Sailing; now there's a thought!

Haven't had this much fun since Terminal 3 at FCO burned down the day before I flew in.

Update: after boarding, the flight to JFK was cancelled. We all deplaned, dashed to the Delta desk to rebook, no international flights from DTW until tomorrow; but DELTA HAD ALREADY REBOOKED ME! One extra connection, and I will arrive at MXP at 6pm rather than 8am, but it's all good if JFK isn't involved. I fly from DTW to Chicago, then to Frankfurt (arriving tomorrow morning, then another flight into MXP.

I hope this is my last post on this topic, but I love my Delta!!

Funny you should post this...I've been wondering if I'll raise any brows when I board later this year with no return flight. Sailing home...

Zoe, That is not so unusual. I've been asked to show additional docs at least twice just in the last 3 years, although for a slightly different circumstance (one way tickets). In one case, I had one-way tickets on two different airlines because I had used FF miles. United would not let me complete online check-in. I had to go to the airport and check in with a person who asked me how long I was staying and how I was returning. I had to show a print out of my return booking. Another time was on BA on an intra-Europe flight from London to Austria; I had to show my ticket leaving the Schengen area (I was flying home on Austrian).

If delta were REALLY taking care of you they would put you on a flight to Amsterdam or Paris leaving later today from DTW. Or not cancelled the flight.

They probably already had people they needed to kick off those flights let alone add someone else!

Hope you can wrangle some miles out of this, Zoe.
Christi, we weren't asked about the return when we flew one way on miles and sailed back. Or maybe our return plans just came out in conversation at check in.

I imagine it is the individual agent and how "on the ball" they are.

Tom, as I posted earlier, there were no available flights to Europe today.

I've been trying to get off this continent since 7am, I'm getting a little cranky.

I'm getting a little cranky.

You are allowed to be cranky. Very.
Keep us posted? #$%%$#. So much for the "Buon viaggio!" I wished you this morning!

Weather issues at the New York area airports today, and unfortunately regional jets are the first to get delayed/cancelled. Sounds from the routing like they re-booked you on United/Lufthansa. Best wishes for getting your journey completed!

Update: I have boarding passes and seat assignments through to Milano.
Wheels up in 1:05?

Re: rerouting: not only am I flying west to go east, but also north to go south.

Must say, I have met some very nice people today - airline staff and fellow passengers in a similar pickle.

Hopefully my next update will be a trip report!

Yoohoo? Are you safely in Italy yet?

All's well that ends in Italy. 38 travel hours later, waking up in Hotel Berna, Milano.

Good choice, the Berna, as you know. Maybe their breakfast helped pull you back together.....

Excellent. Very glad the fork has been stuck in the getting-there!

Wonderful! I stayed at Berna last October and in April they sent me a birthday greeting via email! Very nice, I enjoyed my stay there, too.
Zoe, when I went to Naples recently, I stayed in the hotel you recommended - StarTerminus Hotel, very convenient to the train station. I had a renovated room which was very nice. I loved Naples! I had several adventures while sightseeing.

Judy, great to hear that you liked the hotel. I will be in Napoli in mid-June, trying out a B&B near the waterfront.
