We're assessing whether or not to sign up for the Viking Trip Protection Plan and we're interested in learning if those who have used it have found it to be worth the expense.
Is this associated with a Viking River or Ocean cruise? If so, I suggest looking at the Viking forum on Cruise Critic. Cruise Critic also has an entire forum devoted to travel insurance for cruisers.
I will first admit that I know nothing of what they offer for coverage, but my gut tells me that one might be better off using an independent carrier to cover your trip. I would think that with a third party, there would be fewer limitations and your coverage would extend to activities beyond the Viking Cruise. For example, is airfare coverage included? Or only included if you purchase their airfare package? Do they offer full cash refunds or damages? Or do they indicate that some things may be reimbursed as vouchers for future travel? What about hotel reservations, train tickets, and costs related to time spent there before and after the cruise? Are those reimbursed? or outside the coverage of the policy?
My hunch is that you could probably purchase an all inclusive travel insurance policy including medical and evacuation for a portion of the cost of their policy. Or their policy may be fantastic and cheap.
Please note that many travel insurance plans require you to buy the policies within 10-14 days of your first deposit, if you want pre-existing conditions coverage. Good luck!
Viking Protection Plan info available on their website. Covers only your costs paid to Viking: cruise, Viking Air and Viking extensions. Insurance cost based on cost of Viking trip (not your age). Viking (not the insurance portion provider) also adds Cancel For Any Reason as future cruise credits (I think you have to rebook within 1 year, but could be for sailing later than 1 year). If you’re booking Viking more than a year out from sailing (a common occurrence) you may not be able to buy stand alone third party insurance for pre existing medical coverage that early. I think if you already have existing annual travel insurance plan at time of your booking and renew on time into the year of your sailing then that would work. Or go ahead and buy Viking insurance within the short window from deposit needed for pre existing coverage. Just my understanding of their insurance; confirm details yourself!!
As a side note, review your CREDIT CARD protection options. There is often a lot of overlap of travel (and health) protection on CC's that are travel specific, so worth reviewing those coverage options too.
I usually get such a plan, if we are on a river cruise or group tour. Otherwise, I get medical evacuation and health coverage from my AmEx card. Just for health and evacuation it is very cheap and the old we get, the more we may need it.
